I was researching DIY subwoofers and decided with my woodworking skills that I could build a beautiful loudspeaker. I have two Energy Reference Connoisseur RC-30 speakers and could build a DIY speaker that outperforms them. However, the drivers are quite attractive and would save money if I used them; each speaker having one 1" aluminum dome tweeter and two 5 1/2" woofers, and I could add dual 8" or 10" woofers and make a much better enclusre. After doing some research I see that a DIY 3-way speaker can be pretty complicated. So to narrow my plans and research a bit I have a few questions. I plan to use these for 2-channel music only without a subwoofer. Size is not an issue.
1) Should I use the Energy drivers or is it worth it to buy something different? Saving money is nice, but I can buy better quality/more expensive drivers if I should.
2) I am thinking TMMWW by adding dual 10" woofers but I notice TMWW is more common. I would be using MM since I already have 4 of them. Are there good reasons NOT to use both mids? (I assume a common reason is to save money. But are there also technical reasons, i.e., crossover demands, power demands etc.?) [I will look into TMMWW, MTMWW, WMTMW issues later.]
3) I plan to add two 10" woofers rather than one 8", one 10" or dual 8". Other than size and money, what are the reasons to NOT use two 10" woofers? Additionally, I would likely make a sealed enclosure with f3 around 47Hz. Any comments on whether this is a bad choice?
4) If I use the energy drivers, what specifications should I pay attention to for 10" woofers to make sure they behave well together? (I've looked at Seas, Scanspeak, SB Acoustics, Hi-Vi, Dayton Reference, etc.)
4) My energy speakers have posts for bi-amping. Are there reasons to NOT bi-amp?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
