Shortcutting un-used windings

Hello gents,

Question: Can or should you shortcut un-used windings secondary windings?
The 2 transformers (for each channel 1) in the PM665VXi have 2 primary windings (220v / 240v) and 2 both centre tapped secondary windings. Of the 2 sedondary windings I only use the one with the higest voltage (48-0-48). The whole thing just crossed my mind when I was reading and start building the Quasimodo jig so I wandered whether in normal operation I can or should shortcut the un-used secondary winding as well.

thx in advance

I mean the transformer 5 secondary connections. Across red and yellow i measure 96 RMS (48-0-48). Blue and Orange are not connected to anything. but secondaries obviously use the same centre tapped 0. If I connect (ie: shortcut or short) Blue and Orange with eachother if what I'm trying to say. Or doesn't that really matter because Ornage and Blue are not connected to anything else.?

OK thx. It just came to my mind becuase of the Quasimodo test jig setup. See image from the manual. Of course thats a completely different situation where nothing is hooked up to the mains and the primary is shorted as well.

A short-circuited secondary will reflect back to the primary as a short across your wall power and blow the fuse in the main box.

(For very small transformers the reflected short may be only 10 Amps so the main fuse will hold while the transformer and line-cord get hot, smoke, burn.)

Un-used leads should be insulated and secured where they can not come loose.

One other question before I really make a potential boom mistake. Why is it important to know the polarity? I understood the difference is in which direction the primary and the secondaries are wound. I know for a fact that the transformer of the PM655VXi has 2 secondaries both using the same center-tap. I actually don't understand what it matters as the secondaries give me AC 76 Volt and AC 96 Volt. Mark (quasimodo) writes about it as well but how or why is it imporntant to know in terms of how I hook up the quasimodo jig?
