Okay, I know this is a really bad way to decide on a driver, but bear with me......
Does anyone know of any LF drivers (preferably not too expensive) with semi-transparent cone materials? The kind of thing I'm looking for is like what Mission used to use for their LF drivers in a lot of their ranges about 5 or 6 years ago. I think Scanspeak do a couple of coax drivers with totally transparent cones but they're a bit expensive and not quite what I'm looking for.
The reason i want a semi-transparent diffuse type material is because me and a friend who designs lighting stuff were having a chat over a beer and thought it might be fun to make some gimmick speakers by combining our skills.
Any ideas?

Paradigm mini Monitors use a completelly see through cone woofer size 6 + 1/2 inches. You can see the spider and voice coil former moving, when the cone moves.
As for buying drivers, the only see-though drivers i've ever seen is the fullrange water-proof mylar cone type used for door intercoms,pa 100v line arrays. And the wattage for these is pretty low, about 0.1 w rms,to the most powerful of only a pathetic 15w rms.
Paradigm sell parts, but only to companies, repairshops and buisness men,not general public.

Check car audio subs. I think its been done before--maybe just not in any of this years manuf. current models. You'll have to buy used--search ebay. Can't tell you any manuf. the come to mind. JVC had some that had illuminating dustcaps I believe.

LF drivers with semitransparent cones
Hi Redeye,
take a look here, this might be what You`re searching for:
Seas WT171 or WP171NP
The Seas WP171NP (cone= Polypropylen= PP) is semitransparent.
The Seas WT171 (cone= so called XP material) is almost fully transparent.
I have not checked prices but as far I can recall there are around Euro 80/driver.
I believe Seas also has a somewhat bigger (8") and also smaller (5") LF-drivers with PP-cone but cannot remember the type numbers at the moment - sure You`ll find them with a google search.
There are some other brands of drivers with semitransparent cones (Harbeth, for instance ).
All of them (as far I know) have the cone made from Polypropylene.
Hope this helps a little.

Re: LF drivers with semitransparent cones
Polypropylene is transparent in its natural state. It also degrades in sunlight.
The very 1st MTMs i built (triangulated TLs/1976) were Harbeth (IIRC) factory units that were claimed to be the 1st use of PP and they were clear.
PP is usually doped because they have a fairly distinctive colouration in their natural state.
The speaker below is an example (found on the side of the road -- its mate suffered from cone failure from UV exposure.
