Seas A26

Hi Greg

Looks like we’re in the same boat. SEAS A26RE4/T35C002 arrived just before Xmas and I've read «all there is» about this kit. So many different enclosures and configurations. I'm still confused.. and yes, I’m a noob as well.

Aperiodic. The easiest way is to build the standard 28l box with an aperiodic vent.
I don’t want to mess too much with the original idea. I love simplicity in all kinds of design and will use the 1st order crossover.
Many builders love this configuration but find it lacking in bass extension. Is my room too big? Will I regret it?

Sealed. I have read a lot and even talked to a few guys online about the 10” A26RE4 deserving a bigger box. If I understand correctly I will get the correct Q from a 74-liter sealed enclosure. It will give a smoother roll-off and deeper bass, but less dynamic mid-bass... Am I right? I’m not sure I want to trade off slam in mid-bass just to reach down to 30Hz…
@planet10 has blessed us with a thoughtful concept of a sealed version with the placements of the elements based on the golden ratio. «SEAS A26L Golden Ratio 0v81»
Will it play nice with the standard 1st order crossover recommended by SEAS? Has anyone built this speaker?

Ported. Full throttle with huge ported enclosure, DeVore-style. Many different opinions about optimal enclosure sizes, port diameter, and length. Most people seem to love the sonics from their ported build even though some of them are very different. Okay, you can tune a ported enclosure to 25-30Hz, but isn't there always a trade-off? What do I lose? Will I still be able to use the standard crossover?
Anyway, here’s a happy builder:

My setup is Harbeth SHL5+ and Luxman L-550AXII in a 40m2 living room. This project is just for fun. A step aside. Not a replacement for the Harbeths. A funny speaker with more slam than the Harbeths, but still with great midrange quality. That's what I'm looking for.

Greg, what is your expectation - or goal for the project?

Funny
i replaced my shl5plus with seas a26.
while i think a bigger box makes sense, youll still will never get prodigious bass with that woofer.

Well, that’s an interesting move... I'm sure my Harbeths won’t go anywhere.
A sealed box of about 70 liters is very likely. I'm not looking for prodigious bass, but fast and accurate is preferable.

If I remember correctly, didn’t you build a ported box with a waveguide or a horn?

I used the kit cabinet

good luck with the build! Take your time and enjoy!

Thanks! I read this article a few days ago. Very interesting. Not much information about the cabinet.
I guess T35C002 needs another crossover?

I think I have seen the cabinet details and it would have been from casual browsing rather than seeking it out. I might be confusing it with something else though since a quick google didn't throw up anything. There's a few about and enough forum chat for me to be aware of them.

There's two things to try to improve bass extension in the standard 28l box: 1) double the volume of acousta-stuff vs. what comes with the Madisound kit, 2) consider a series crossover. I've run both with a variety of amps, and the bass extension with relatively high Zout amplifiers improves greatly. With a low Zout amp like an Aleph 20, the bass emphasis is excessive to the point where a tube preamp is helpful. Unless of course you're looking for that flubby rumbly sound, which is a mood. 😉

For what it is worth, while considering which boxes to try I happened to have some advent legacy speakers that I picked up for $20. Woofers dropped right in, tweeters needed a little finessing, refinished the boxes, new vintage look speaker cloth...exquisite sound with my F6 clone. I think around 50l interior. Might eventually explore one of Planet10's designs just to see what it does but too many other projects before I get to that. Moral of the story...many ways to approach the A26. These are a fun speaker that invite a less than analytical approach. Just try some things and enjoy.

I found it.

Great advice. If I choose to build a large ported box I have the flexibility to tune it to my room and taste.

@fatmarley wrote something interesting about the optimal volume in another thread.:

A port tuned to 20hz (1.59" Diameter x 6" long port) in 56ltr would suite my room fine, and with room gain I'd achieve good bass all the way down to 25hz. The other advantage of a low tuned port, is the fact that It can also go louder. With a port tuned to 20hz, the driver is hardly moving when producing deep bass.
If you have problems with bass boom in your room, I'd go for sealed. In my room, ported would sound better.

I just found out about the homage to Dynaco A25 made (for a limited period?) by Omega Speaker Systems.
Did anyone have a listen to those?
Seems like an expensive variant of the A26 kit with more luxurious boxes. English oak, cabinets only extended downwards? Same simple crossover, with the same SEAS drivers.

Statement from Omega:
They can be played either sealed or ported
They come with foam to block the ports for sealed operations
Sealed bass to 48Hz
Ported bass to 33HZ
