SD 1 speakers

The woofer sounds "fine" until I give it more power at that point it sounds as if you would crack wood in rhythm with the music. It looks just fine to me (however I am not a specialist ...) ,a friend just suggested to bring it to a local guy here for re coning. I will probably find more info as we pull it out, yet If I am told it is "KAPUT" then I need an alternative.🙁

Sounds like "wood cracking" ???
Over-driving is definitely a possibility, turn down the volume.

If you like your music loud perhaps you need new speakers, also if ported they may be getting too much infra-sonic information does your amp/pre-amp have a sub-bass filter?? if so does using it make a difference??

Hi everyone,
The foam around the speaker was broken, finally got them out. They are french speakers buy the name of AUDAX model MHD24P45TSM. My friend got me in contact with someone which may be able to repair them. If not I will be on the lookout...

Hi,

Re-foam both drivers, the other will be very near going as well.
E-pray hass lots of options, all far cheaper than new drivers.

The SD1 I recall as a large bass/mid 2 way - replacement drivers
are a bit of a nightmare though Seas do paper 10" bass/mids.

🙂/sreten.

Hi. Sorry, I've only just found this post. Dont' get on here too often. I had - in fact still have a pair of wonderful SD1's. When I bought them they were tatty and I managed to track down Steen Doessing (SD Acoustics) in London and he gave me loads of help. He gave me a crossover circuit diagram and he made new cloth-covered fronts/sides for a very reasonable fee. He even gave me some touch-up crackle-finish paint...top bloke, I have to say.
My bass drivers went too - foam surrounds died. I got replacements from Ivan Leslie - IPL acoustics. The original driver (Audax PR240M0) is no longer made, but the replacement item is probably even better and will work fine with no changes to the crossover and will fit the opening in the SD's perfectly.

If you are still in touch with Mr. Doessing please let me know. I heard he dropped out of all things HiFi years ago and now works as Photographer..

I encountered the SD-1 a few times and nearly bought a pair. They where certainly unusual and special.

If you have any information maybe make it available on-line (photos, dimension, X-Over)?

The midranges where IIRC modified Audax PR170M0 (or earlier equivalent) drivers which are still available, the HF unit is a Visaton item also still available or with a close equivalent IIRC. Having a crossover schematic and a suitable alternative woofer would allow DIY'ers to create their own version of this rather special (and way ahead of it's time) design...

Cross-over circuit diagram.

Not quite sure how I attach a copy of the crossover diagram. It's literally a hand-drawn (by Steen) circuit diagram. I will look it out and get back shortly.
I have just had on of my ribbons go. Don't think I can get replacements unless you know differently?

Fantastic - thanks for this donkeytrousers!
I've got two pairs (front & rear with a Tannoy DCC centre in a 5.1 setup) and have been told that upgrading the crappy inductors will give even tighter bass - now I've got the values, will go shopping & report back.

SD Acoustics SD 1

Hello All.

I'm new in this forum, so, sorry to begin my introduction with all these questions, but I really need some help.

I've seen that these posts about the SD Acoustics are quite old already, but I'm a "new" owner of this SD 1's but I have absolutely no information about them.

I'm having a few " issues" with them and would pretty much like to get it solved.

One of the woofers is making some sort of distortion, like if there is some metal part vibrating inside it ( pardon my technical english).

Also, I need to replace all the caps ( they have been stored for about 15/20 years), and I don't know it's the values (they are unreadable due to their age)

Last but not least, is there anyone here who can tell me their specifications, or, eventually have the owner's manual, because I can't find it anywhere...

Thank you so much for your attention.

Cheers

SD Acoustics SD 5 circuit diagram & loudspeaker types

Is there anybody having information about SD Acoustics SD 5:
cross over circuit diagrams?
which loudspeaker types are built in?
better loudspeaker / successors?
mechanics, esp. how to remove the cross over PCB?

I would like to renew my old but loved loudspeakers.
Thank you in advance,
BerndK

SD1s - info I still have!

See my post of November 2011 for what the circuit diagram. The values for the capacitors, chokes and resistors are shown on the circuit digram. This diagram was supplied to me by Steen Doessing many years ago when I was in touch with him to help me restore my SD1s. The details of the drive units are:

Original woofer: AudaxPr240MO - replacement: Audax MHD24P45TSM2CA14
Mid: Audax MHD17HR37TSM2CA7 (I think this was the original but can't be 100% certain)
Don't remember what the ribbon tweeter was, but it was great!
I will look out what else I have and pot it later if there is any.

Hi All,

Just checked my excellent SD1s. The tweeter I have fitted is a Visaton RHT 12S.

Other text on the back of the tweeter is:

HOCHLEISTUNGS-BÄNDCHEN-HOCHTÖNER

HIGH-POWER RIBBON-TWEETER

RHT 12S

Impedance 8

TWEETER A RUBAN HAUTE PERFORMANCE

I have these tweeter in both of my SD1, and suspect they are original. There are no waveguides, unlike many of the google images out there, but they do have the same felt surround I have seen on other SD1 pics posted.

Cheers
