Speakerland has desiged a new Scan Speak 2-way system.
Very nice, very good. Ringradiator and 18 cm revelator
Look at

and then Ultimo 'download werktekening' for drawings and X-over.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Also look at hot for the new d'appolito design

$450 > $55.

Has anyone heard both of the drivers in similar setups?

To me, that's like saying that there is little difference between a Revelator midbass and a $2.50 Radio Shack midbass, because both are cone-based midbass drivers of a similar size... "$225 > $2.50". What do these 2 drivers have in common aside from the fact that both are ring radiatiors with a phase plug?

Well what i actually was trying to say is, i would like to hear the audible difference between the Scans-peak driver and the Vifa (little brother) driver.

Obviously i didn't spell it out clearly enough.

Please don't exaggerate anothers post and make it out like we are idiots. Thanks

Sorry, I don't read it that way at all. The pricing here invites the comparison, and frankly I'd be interested in hearing it myself. Once you get to these price levels, it's valid to want to separate true performance gains from hype and markup. And to consider alternatives using other technologies (like ribbon or 'stat).

Sorry bets, i mist your post.
I do own the Vifa XT25 and i think it sounds very good, but only with a high enough crossover. Ive listent to the SSs but it was about 1 min. so i didnt realy heard them that wel. For me, their not worth the extra expense....

To me these drivers has very much in common.

Both Drivers are made by the same company. Scan Speak is the high end part of Vifa, like Excel and Seas.

Scan speak use a neodymium magnet and Vifa a normal Ferrite.
There is a little difference on the shape of phase plug.
Scan speak R2904/700000 has a aluminum front where the Vifa XT25 comes in 2 versions, one with a aluminum front and one with a plastic front and two different price tags.
The membranes looks very similar.

Frequency curve: Very alike. Both goes straight 40 kHz, no notches or peaks
Distortion: Both under 0.2% from 2.5 KHz to 20KHz. no notches or peaks
Waterfall: I can’t tell the difference. Looks like a wall.
Pulse: Both are extremely fast and no ringing.

And of course the finish of the Scan Speak R2904/700000 is second to none. Not that the Vifa XT25 is poorly made, it’s more like the difference between a Maybach and a Mercedes 500.

To me there is no doubt that the Vifa XT25 is a Budget model of the Scan Speak without much trade in. Now we just have to wait for Peerless makes a low end model of the Vifa XT25.
If think you can use both speakers in the same applications.

Now you may ask, why did I choose the Scan Speak version? Well. I got them cheap, not.

I also find it very odd to use this(fantastic) tweeter in a speaker that has a sensitivity below 85 dB.

I must also disagree with Claus(sorry🙂 ) that the Scanspeak and the Vifa are almost alike. It is true that the Vifa was the original and you can say that the SS is a modified version, but there are some pretty big modifications.
A much better magnetsystem, lower heating/compression(which are a problem with the Vifa(low impedance and sensitivity), within the voicecoil the membrane is different which eliminates the problems with the poor dispersion from the Vifa unit.

Still way to expensive for me though.:bawling:

mats,
yep a big waste indeed, this efficiency mismatch is very serious business likely to compromise the entire balance of the system. IMO even in an MTM configuration with 2 of those revelator midwoofers there would still be a problem.

I really don´t think that damping a tweeter is a problem. Less heat in the magnet/coil system means a more linear driver, so if you can drop some power in a resistor, do it. Anyway i am gonna run this babies in a full active MTM WW system. As midrange drivers I have two SS 15W/8531G10 and as woofer two custommade 26cm Vifa drivers. A better solution might have been the new 12M/4631G00 midrange driver (a real beauty) .
To call the R2904/700000 a rip off . No way, but you can get much of the same quality by buying the vifa version. And no they are not the same. But you will get a hard time if you have to tell who is who by looking at there messuring rapports, the only major difference I found is 94dB contra 91dB sensitivity.
How they sound, is a different story, but I will find out.
