SB's vs Eton

Well, I just about decided on SB drivers for my next 2 ways and then I started looking at the Eton's that I looked at years ago.

Originally I wanted to do a SB 8" aluminum with an SB tweeter for some good lowend in a floorstander. I don't think I would be completely happy with that listening to movies even though it should go down to 25 Hz.

BTW, this system will be mostly for music but I do use it with the TV/DVD.

Then I started looking at a system I designed years ago but never built, using the Eton 5" (5-200)with an Eton Magnesium tweeter (26hd1) crossed over at 4K. Then use my 6 cubic ft box that had the Shiva in it ( the Shiva is blown, long story), for the sub, with the 12" Dayton DVC310-88. I guess I would cross the sub over at 133 Hz but it depends on the blend and distortion of the Eton 5's down low. The other problem would be the directivity of the sub depending on crossover frequency.

Price points are definitely different but, how would you compare the 2 systems?

If you need more info, let me know. I guess I should set up links to each driver.

This thread on SB Acoustics 3 way could fit your HT requirements at a reasonable cost. You could separate the TMWW into a two piece TM - WW for moving weight reduction or easier MT top rotation. These are low Le drivers with wide bandwidth and reasonable cone breakup.

The speakers are:
2 x SB Acoustics :: SB29RDC-C000-4
2 x SB Acoustics :: 6" SB17NRXC35-4
4 x SB Acoustics :: 8'' SB23NRXS45-8

A Google on SB17NRXC35 will yield a few well thought out designs with complete Xovers and cabinet plans for you to study. Some European designs use a single SB 10" woofer bottom box and MT top box.

Eton drivers tend to have below par non linear distortion performance. The SBs on the other hand do not.

Your two options are quite at odds with one another from a system perspective and make me wonder why there isn't a third option - to use an SB 5", or similar, with a sub?

As Scott has mentioned, to meet the 8" SB you will need a really low xover point and a very robust tweeter. A better choice would be to build the Kairos and add a sub.

And there is also another solution.. the right tweeter with the right waveguide.

Dave Pellegrene has some here:

acoustic waveguides

Considering the desire for a metal dome (and the need for a larger dome), the 4080165 and the 80165 waveguides with the Dayton Audio RS28*A* tweeter would be a good choice:

I'd consult with Dave P. first for his thoughts on the right waveguide/tweeter combination for the job:

Indeed a waveguide would work well, but I wonder if the Kairos would be the best idea anyway because the design work has already been done. Taming a metal cone and a waveguide isn't exactly an easy project, so I guess it all depends on how confident the OP is in their crossover design skills 😀

Yup, my thought as well. 🙂

Its odd, but the Kairos remind me of that scene in Risky Business (Tom Cruise 80's classic), where a big black male prostitute in drag shows up at his door and he basically says that what all suburban white-bread male teenager's want is (Rebecca De Morney's character). (..Ironic, considering that Tom probably would have preferred the black guy. 😀 )

The Kairos (as a design: subjective performance in particular) is pretty much what most audiophiles want

..even if it might not be the desired aesthetic or perhaps doesn't do "it all" (..down to below 20 Hz, high dynamics, or having treble detail comparable to the very best ribbon tweeters).

+1 for Kairos. I own them and would recommend them highly. The design is awesome and the drivers are awesome. Build a very quiet and strong sealed box, use the best xo parts you can afford (big gage coils) and provide plenty of clean power and your speaker search is over. I've owned a lot of great speakers, Quad 2905, UsherBe20, Katana, and Kairos is definitely better than those. The bass is very surprising how clean and low it plays for normal music listening, but heavy bass music with high SPL needs more.

A narrow MT cabinet like the 9"W Kairos could use an expanded base woofer cabinet(fat bottom), or a beveled edge TM - W interface for a clean look.

Passive crossover L's and C's are expensive. Building a proven design can often save enough money avoiding C+L mistake purchases to pay for better drivers.

If the $714 Kairos pair kit is too expensive, price out this option.(Xover available)
2 x SB Acoustics :: SB29RDC-C000-4
2 x SB Acoustics :: 6" SB17NRXC35-4
4 x SB Acoustics :: 8'' SB23NRXS45-8 (OR 2x 10” SB29NRX75-6)
