Err, balance? That's a 4-gang volume pot where one section has a loudness tap. The tap is usually the 4th pin, while the first 3 are the usual ground side - wiper - input. You should be able to confirm this with the multimeter.

You have downloaded the full AU-517/717 service manual, don't you? All of these connections go to individually numbered posts on the F-2720 board (consult the board layout depiction if in doubt).

These are the connections I'd say you need, from top to bottom, left to right:

11 - 07 - 05 - 09 (VR101a)
12 - 08 - 06 - 10 (VR101b)
21 - 19 - 17 (VR101c)
21 - 20 - 18 (VR101d)

So it looks like the two cables with the common shield may actually be attached on the wrong section now, assuming that shield turns out to be 21.

The channels might also be swapped around, which makes no difference if done consistently and is a matter of convention only. I see that on the balance pot they have the "a" section towards the back and the "b" section towards the front. If the same applies to the volume pot, things would look like this (cross-check with original wiring, if any left):

12 - 08 - 06 - 10 (VR101b)
11 - 07 - 05 - 09 (VR101a)
21 - 20 - 18 (VR101d)
21 - 19 - 17 (VR101c)

That said, b - a - d - c doesn't make an awful lot of sense to me, but whatever.
