Rotel RA-02 issue – blown output transistors, need replacement advice

Hi everyone,

I have a Rotel RA-02 that suddenly shut down while playing music. After opening it up, I found that one of the fuses is burnt, also one of the 2SD1047 output transistors was shorted (very low resistance), and one of the 2SB817 transistors seemed to be open circuit. The surrounding resistors look fine, and no obvious burn marks are visible.

I'm looking for original replacements for 2SD1047 and 2SB817, but I'm having trouble finding them locally. Do you know where I could get them in Europe?

Alternatively, I found TIP42CG and BD244C, but they seem to have lower current ratings.

Any recommendations on where to buy good-quality replacements or advice on the best alternative transistors?

Thanks in advance!

NJW0281/0302. Could also use 3281/1302, but do not mix. Don’t mix numbers, but ok to mix CASE styles to get a complementary pair in stock. Even 3P-L package will fit there. Toshiba C5200N (or L) may be suitable, depending on power supply voltage (OnSemi types have SOA ratings matching the originals current production Toshiba do not. Just depends if the S/B breakpoint is high enough.)

C3519/A1386 Sanken are good, but distributors have trouble keeping them in stock.

Which fuse, output or supply? Have you found the cause? Could be a stray wire strand shorting one output. If you don't find and remove what caused the problem and just replace the transistors, they will die again. Have you checked the speakers are OK? Have you checked the remaining transistors of the blown channel (I assume both dead power transistors are in the same one)? Get the service manual so you know what you're doing, Elektrotanya has it.

Both supply fuses. Output ones are good.
I haven't checked the speakers(i will), though I don't think it could be a problem. Just before it stopped working, we were doing furniture layout changes and had to move the amp around, unplug, re-plug everything. When it broke, it was quite hot when i pulled it out of the tv cabinet. There was quite a lot of dust inside the amp as well. So maybe something caused short cirquit because of it. Maybe it just overheated because of layout changes.

As for the power transistors, I am getting one bad transistor from each channel. Sounds weird right?
