Hi guys,
I tried searching the forums but could not find this answerI have a basic question to ask you. I just purchased a Crest 7001 amplifier. I learned it is a class D amp. I heard that class AB amps are more better for highs and mids than a class D amp. I will be running 2 full range speakers JBLMp215's with 250 RMS 8 olms on the Crest 7001 which is 550 watts per channel at 8 olms. I heard you always double the RMS so my amp should be around 500 watts per channel. Will this amp have to much bass and less clarity for my speakers? Is there only a little difference? I have a 4801 and I like the sound it is thick. Should I have went with the crest CA 6 or 9 ab amps?

This is just not true for most of the class d amps out there today. Back when they were used mainly in car audio applications they got the bum rap of only being subwoofer amps.
Since you already bought it, why don't you just listen to it and find out for yourself?
Thanks for the clarrification BWRX. I will try out the amp, so they aren't just subwoofer amps. I searched several internet sites and most of them did say class D amps were used for subswoofers because of there power and efficiency. I also read some people say class D amps were D for Digital. In reading a reliable source I found out they are not digital at all. That is a commonly used myth. Not every amp manufacturer can build class D amps because they must be built well. What does Fredos mean by a it having a switching power supply?
The 4801 was also a class D amp, but with less wattage, after trying that amp and listening to the sound I feel I will never go back to any other type of amp, but the next 2 models up. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't gong to have to much low end for my speakers, since it has more wattage than my 4801. Also will these run ok on 15 amp circuit breakers. I read one person say they won't, the guy at Crest said 20 or 21 amps are recomended. Thanks for the replys guys.

I looked at your site Fredos, I can't believe that amp is 10 pounds, uses 1U rack space, and it is true digital, that is amazing. The wattage numbers are out of this world. Can these amps take a beating?
What is this thread, some kind of D-amp advertisement?
What's next, peranders will post here selling an improved version?

I am in no way affiliated with Fredos. I just came on here to learn some basic knowledge of D amps from the pros.

Hi Mechaboy1,
The amplifiers you are mentioning were Class-H from Crest not Class-D, correct your mistake, Crest CA Series, PRO Series all are Class-H amps,
Only Crest CD 1000, CD2000, CD3000 are Class-D amps.....
Fredos make Class-D amps there arenot digital but Analogue Switching Amplifiers, They are lightweight because they donot feature the Heavy Toroidal Transformer and massive Heatsinks in Class-AB type amps...
These use Switching Supply and Switching Amplifier and thus weight less .....
Update yourself!

Well that was about the rudest thing you could have said. Where's the advert? I'd love to see it.Nixie said:What is this thread, some kind of D-amp advertisement?

Wasn't even my idea initially; someone pointed it out to me in the IRC channel, and I couldn't agree more.

Well, since those comments were directed at Fredos, your suggesting that mechaboy1 is advertising D-amps to Fredos, the guy that runs the company?
Whatever, I'm going to bed to rest, and will let this discussion rest as well. Think what you will. Back to the topic.

Hey, I got an email notification that says "Variac has just replied", yet I do not see a post. What's going on? I still have that email as proof I'm not seeing things

Well, like BWRX said this is simply not true. Nowadays, you cannot compare sound quality between classes so generally. The Class is not important, the implementation is what matters. There are poor class AB amps as well as poor Class D amps, just as there are excellent Class AB amps as well as excellent Class D. The difference between the classes is that the class D design is a more efficient one, which is why it is chosen by many amp designers when designing a high power amplifier.I heard that class AB amps are more better for highs and mids than a class D amp.
that being said, the Crest amplifier you have chosen will probably be just great for you speakers.
...planning on DIYing something anytime soon?
I'd love to hear a class D amp that compares well to a quality class A amp.
Oh wait, I can't... there isn't one!

i have a pair of aleph 3 monos, a pair of rotel B-1070's, and a pair of stereo UCD400's. i also had a mcintosh 402 in here at one time. guess which one im using? yeah, the UCD400. they sound the best, and do the least amount wrong.
Thanks Kanwar, I didn't know the Ca and pro series were H amps, my bad. I am still learning about amps and classes. I inquire about these amps because I would like to learn more about the amps than just pluging them in. I like reading about some of the amp designs that are on this site even though I understand very little technical jargon. It's fantastic how someone can design their own schematics and build an amp. Nothing like seeing your work come to life. I saw Fredos page and I was amazed compared to other amps I've seen on the market mostly dj amps. I got mixed up when I saw the word Digital on his page. Since My amp is an H class amp I will look up information. about it. I read different forums so sometimes I read the wrong info, they often compare sound so generally like Dcibel says. I trust this forum the most. Thanks for the help guys.
