roksan kandy vs cambridge audio azur what to choose
Hi.
I have a dilemma here. At the moment i own roksan kandy kc-1 cd player with ka-1 amp and cambridge audio azur 740c with 740a amp. What would you chose?
Pcm1716 vs wolfson wm8740 dac? Which would be better for future mods?
i had spent all day listening cds and just got confused . Both brands sound really good i would say, just different. Maybe roksan slightly better. But 740c has 2 optical inputs and can be used as external dac which is quite handy with ipod and lossless records. you can control ipod via remote too. 740a has preamp out for sub, roksan doesn't.
Any opinions welcome

The Roskan has better labeled controls and is easier to see. If the sound is not the tie breaker, one has to look at usability. The access to the DAC is also a nifty feature.
Flip a coin and just send the loser to me. 😀

Probably you dont wanna know the postage cost 😉
Sonic performance is important to me. Roksan is better in upper end, CA in lower end probably due bigger PSU caps. Dont really like the voice of CA,sounds weak and in the backstage, roksan has stronger and brighter voice maybe a bit too shouty sometimes, singer seems far closer on roksan gear as well.
Overall im more likely to stay with CA. Maybe with some mods improve mids and highs and id be happy enough.
Anyone tried to tweak 740a or 740c? Results after?

In my opinion, WM8740 is a better DAC than PCM1716. It's a different generation...
Also, 720C has a DSP that upsamples and eliminates the jitter.

IMO, execution might diferentiate between the same level of DAC's. It cannot really make the leap over what a specific DAC chip provides "as best case scenario".
To be fair... never heard a Roksan. Did hear the CA and was good in high-end. Maybe is also a matter of what type music one listens too?
Of course, for some, "good" is good enough, they have no need for "extra". In that case whatever is cheaper is better 🙂

Thanks. I have a 1796 in my Dac. I picked up an 8740 off e-bay but it was a POS. I think execution design, not defective. Had lots of trouble with that guy; had to have e-bay step in. Fake shipping address etc. Then I bought a used CA, but it came damaged thanks to the shipper and it went back. Anyway, I have not been able to compare the two, the BB clearly besting everything else I have in internal CD's, Rotel, Denon and Nad. I have a cheap "Muse" that I built a real power supply for. I want to hear a CA, but there are not any stores any more. The only dealer in a hundred miles is non-stocking media room builder with no showroom. How's that for our nation's capital? I don't know if they are really nice, or another hyped-by-the-press-every small-British-company product.
I have both ca 740a and 740c and if i was you i would keep them , the 740c is a probably the best player in it´s price range and the amp is worth just for the suboutput.
i would sell the rocksans and buy a tube preamp and a sub , i have them and it makes a huge improvement.

could you explain me more about improvement after you bought a tube preamp. what was difference in sonic performance?
the CA740a is a fine sounding amp but as most SS amps bass is a bit thin , mids and highs are a litlle harsh , with the tube pre amp bass is fatter(a little less tight though , still i think it´s worth it) mids and highs are smoother , almost like a hybrid amp.
This my opinion only , i cant tell if you will like it or not but if you can try it please do.

Fatter bass, less tight = low damping factor, the bass coil is not cotrolled and over shoots, resonates on characteristic frequency. Harmonics are higher creating also the impression of "fuller" bass.
misd and highs smoother = lower bandwidth, the high end of the audio spectrum is attenuated.
In a word - coloring of original sound.

yes it is , at the time should have bought a Vincent or any other hybrid but the only one i knew was Luxman and i couldnt finda a used one (luxman a384)
Anyway i still like it better than without tubepreamp and you still get a few db gain , but he should try it before buying/diying one.
