A very open question I know. But I have wanted to make Paul Carmodies Tarkus for a long while and it isn't going to happen for a while so I am looking through my stash looking to make something similar and found a pair of left-overs
A pair of Vifa D25 AG and the smaller Peerless driver

What do most of you prefer for the genre if anything Hard dome or soft dome?
I usually use a soft dome but thought it might be worthwhile using the old stock before buying new stuff
So if I use these in combination with the cheap Peerless SDS 5 inch [ 830656] where would you cross? At 3 k where Vifa recommended or a bit higher?

I have just realised I will have absolutely no data for these HF drivers.
These are the hybrids from last years cloning experiment. D26AG voice coil and faceplate mounted in a D27SG-15 magnet assembly, so no rear chamber; just a foam plug on top of the pole piece.
Means experimentation with second order networks and guess work, it was a singleton and used D26AG sitting next to this pair

Well I guess if you can link me to a $30- compression driver I'd be happy. I take it that you are not impressed with the Tarkus?
I could use the little piezo horns but they sound terrible no matter what I try with them

Maybe I should pull out the old Akai cone tweeters and give then a whirl, they come from the right era. At the moment it is merely a fun project and using what I have but I would appreciate some of your input Brett on driver combinations specifically for Rock music to see if I could apply it to the new party system for christening the new shed next month

Ew.

I understand that. I was, in part, just taking the p***.

Sure, but I'd need to know what you want it to do in terms of SPL, area coverage, budget etc. Sometimes the best option is a generation or two older 15" 2 or 3 way commercial system off ebay. I nearly bought some JBLs in excellent condition just a couple of suburbs away for $200ea. They were 2x15 2 ways. However I have about 100 drivers too many and am in the process of selling the excess off, so I had no need to add more.

Sure I think I was just firing back

My beloved wife would have kittens if I buy any more woofers.

I like my old party system SPL is not a problem as I am limited by proximity to the old people next door.
Thanks tho.
I'm budget limited for the next 20 years

Tweeters for rock? Horns. Like these.

They need great big metal domes to work. Like those.

Now, let's rock!

Rock and roll, and dome, don't belong in the same sentence.

Beat me to it! 😉 From piezo to titanium horns, so plenty of price points between the two.

Regardless, the D25AG has an alum. diaphragm, so at least pays 'lip service' to the Altec horns that most music was mastered on through the '80s and having chosen them over a bunch of other types in a blind test when it first came out it seems a reasonable choice.

If more recent music, then titanium and if too harsh/strident, then damp by misting on cheap lacquer hairspray or if you have access to an airbrush, layer of super thinned Dammar as required.

Yeah, you need a driver that will handle the mids with authority and take the load off of the tweeter and why all my inexpensive party speakers were ~full range 12" + a cheap horn capped off with a PIO 2.2 uF [can't remember what XO that was].

I don't buy the above arguments, you don't need a PA system to play rock, 'specially if you not going to be playing at levels that will p off your neighbours. A well designed 3 way will give the hard work to the woofers, and allow the upper drivers to play relatively cleanly

My party speakers are not PA stuff Pete but they all have big midrange drivers, 8"s and 10"s and they do seem to do a better job of old fashioned R&R for some reason. But I tend not to pad down tweeters for this sort of fun so I need something with higher SPL levels than for inside listening. I must have done something right with the hybrid tweeter tho as it is "brilliant" in the sense of bright and loud
