Rewire Toroidal from 110v to 220v

Hi 🙂

I´m trying to rewire a Presonus ADL 600 from 110v to 220v. I know the primary/secondary have to be in serial, but I´m not sure on the exact setup of this transformer, so I´m a bit lost.

Wire colors are white / black / Yellow / Orange

There is an 8ohm resistance between yellow/orange AND also between Black/white.

With black/white tied together (shorted) - the resistance between yellow/orange is 14ohm

Can anyone help me out with the procedure on this.

The white-black winding is one half of the primary and the yellow-orange winding is the other half. You need to find out which is the start and which is the finish of each of these windings to ensure you connect them in correct phase.

Based on the above, I would expect that if you connected any of the following you would yield 16 ohms:

white-yellow
white-orange

black-yellow
black-orange

It's very strange that if you shorted one winding you got 14 ohms.
 
How do I find out which wire is the start of the winding ?

I actually got the amp to run with the black/white shorted and yellow/orange connected as before. That config gave me 110v on secondary.

I´ve also tried shorting the yellow/orange, that gave me 220v on the secondary, but (close to) 0v on the pcb board outputs, so I´m guessing that was out of phase. (amp did not run)

I´m now going to do a real world test on the amp to see if there are any audio artifacts etc - and I´ll report back.

I have two identical transformers, one of them is still untouched - so i can use it as reference.


I´ll be going through several pieces of 110v gear that I need to convert, so I really need to get these things figured out. There really needs to be a wiki dedicated to 110v <> 220v conversions.

Can anyone point me towards some info on how to find the primary/secondary - winding start/finish.

Would really appreciate all info and help 🙂
 
rewireyour tranfo as shown below ( dont forget to use low voltage supply anythimh from 5 to 60 volts will do ).

measure voltage between yellow & orange should be equual to your supply.

measure voltage between white & black should be equual to your supply.

measure voltage between black & orange must be twice your supply.

if twice your ok, if not reverse white & black and test again

measure voltage between yellow & orange should be equual to your supply.

measure voltage between white & black should be equual to your supply.

measure voltage between white & orange must be twice your supply.

- well, I should have - but I figured this out and the amp is running smoothly now. Now I just need to learn some more before I attempt something similar again.

Is there any universal wire color coding spec for these toroid trans that would indicate the first winding start/end - and the second winding start/end?

...and sorry to bother you guys with my ignorance - I am just starting to figure this out :xeye:
 
Hi,
build or get someone to build for you a Mains Light Bulb Tester.

The idea is that you plug in the mains light bulb in series with the unit to be tested.
If there is a wiring fault then then bulb lights up and drops almost all the mains voltage safely.
The little voltage and current that remains passes safety throught the equipment without causing major damage or blowing anything up.

It works especially well when trying to fathom out the phases of a twin primary transformer.

Do get the bulb tester built up and use it every time you test a piece of equipment whether you have built it from scratch or modified it or just carried out what appears to be minor maintenance.

It may save you a potentially Lethal accident.
