retrofitting tele pots, size constraints

Tele factory equipped small sized a1m both.
Desire fullsized cts type american splined.
But naked cts can't be lowered into cavity, why, channel width exact diameter.
So shave lumber?
So, shave or deform cts to permit fitup?
Or choose another full sized pot?
Purpose of full sized pot is to gain greater reliability esp of stylus contact confidence. Smaller pots apparently elicit scratchyness from use.

Jon is right, small vs. large makes no difference as long as they are good quality. The least likely to go scratchy are the Bourns 95: they will fit, they have a conductive plastic track and are sealed. Pricey though.

Ok I will mouser or digikey these bjourn95 pots.

So you guys are saying the stylus contact onto substrate carbon track is identically alike 14mm versus 24mm.

I'd think more stylus (s) in parallel are achieved on wider track, 24mm, not so? This reduces contact aberration.

You may need to cut down the pot shaft to get the knobs low enough to the mount plate.
Certainly, this was an issue on the last Tele I worked on. I had another whole assembly to grab the old pots from. I was fitting a 5 way switch but the new assemblies pots had shafts which were too long so I transfered the old asemblies pots to the new assembly.
One of those "Oh crap" moments when you think everything is done and you discover it as you are doing the final re-assembly.

Cheers,
Ian

There is a big difference in the stylus articulation, 14mm versus 24mm, and brands too.
I restored the old small pots by removing them to access the window to inject caig rejuvenator.
Tested on tramp amp recently blessed off repairs perfection, until scratchiness reappears, will it?
