Hey all,
Wow the forums really got awesome since I last browsed..I remember when we all were asking questions about the little LCD panels that were MADE for OHPs hahaha 😀 Awesome work everyone! Onto my question...
well after using (and enjoying!!) my Dukane 4003 OHP + 15" LCD setup for the past year and a half I wanted something else to do. I had a 250W MH HQI and ballast around that I never got to using. I hope some of you with more experienceabout the HQI bulbs can help me.
I was going to put the MH bulb into an Elmo Solar Deluxe (once the current stock bulb dies). Now I knew about these HQI bulbs exploding from mishandling and all that 2 years ago when I bought it, but now that I have returned to the good ol diyaudio forums i see posts about the bulbs being in danger of explosions from heat. From the 'soup ladel' homemade style reflectors i assume. Scary Stuff!!!! 😱
Am I running a big saftey risk here if I were to put the 250 HQI into the elmo? I like my movies, but I'd rather have a dimmer yellow picture with Halogen then have to worry about my OHP exploding and injuring someone...
The elmo runs a 575W MH lamp from the factory, which I assume also generates it's share of heat. Would the 250W HQI retrofit generate that much more heat in the OHP enclosure that I should worry about flaming death during a movie??
haha I'd leave the reflector and condensor which are in the thing also. I'd leave the stock fan in the OHP, which pulls air through and not blowing upon the bulb..
Any opinions, or suggestions to keep me alive if I should do this? lol. Thanks a lot guys! 😎

I really doubt that a 250 HQI would generate more heat, due to it being much more light efficient and using less power, I think it will be more than twice cooler🙂
Just my 2 cents

Heya buddy welcome back!!! good to see you around again!!
First off, the 250w mh do run hot, about 300deg c but i can tell ya now no where near as hot as halogen, and on comparison it should be about half of your 575w mh thats in it now.
The metal halide bulbs we use arent that risky, they do carry a risk sure but they are not as risky as pro projector bulbs due to the hqi bulb having an outer jacket. With pro projector bulbs because they dont have this outer jacket, they can explode just from dust being on the arc chamber or tube wich is simply fully exposed. The hqi series of bulbs has an outer jacket so its more protected but the kind of things that make the hqi bulbs explode is overheating of the arc tube, a faulty arc tube, cold sudden air difference on a red hot bulb, or a drop of water. Overheating is the biggest cause and yet to date touch wood no one in here has actually had a hqi bulb explode, but we still carry the risk.
The soup laddels overheat the bulb, id bet you would be lucky to get half of the life out of a bulb as they just simply overheat and the electrodes burn out much faster.
If you are stuck without a reflector i can help you there, i have a couple of reflectors sitting around here to suit that bulb, its a precision spherical type and will work without a problem in your ohp.
I say go for it mate, you wont have any problems and all should run fine. Just try to get your bulb lined up to the center of the frensel, have the bulb at the rear frensels focal length and to make sure you keep anything plastic away from the bulb so we dont get any fires.
Keep us posted on your progress and good luck!
