I have e a pair of these and the piano black finish is a bit faded and lightly scratched here and there. I would like to paint/re-spray it using car paint, maybe urethane. Any advice? Do I need to primer the old paint first or will a light sanding with fine sandpaper be enough?
Using a large compressor and typical spray gun.
Any - any - advice welcome.
Thanks
Jose

I'd always go for a thorough sanding of the entire surface, followed by a high solids primer, then your color/top coats.
Hi,
Try T cutting them. Sympathetic minimal use will improve
them a lot whilst still leaving a "used" patina to them.
AFAIK piano finishes have several layers of clear over
the base colour, so primer would be a bad idea IMO.
rgds, sreten.

If you can polish out the scratches I,d use 1000 or 2000 grit sandpaper sanding in one direction only and using compound across the sanding marks staying away from the corners and hand polishing those.
If painting, the old paint can be acceptable as a base if you know what I was and use appropriate top coat that will adhere to it.

Brian Cheney(RIP) of VMPS Speakers did the woodwork for these speakers. I have one of the very last pairs of black speakers made. (April 1994, I think)
Maybe someone at the VMPS forum remembers what Brian used.
