Resistor upgrade

Hi all,
I'm building new xovers, and want to upgrade the resistors, which are cheap no names. There is one 1R0 10W in the tweeter circuit and one 8R6 10W in the mid range circuit. I can only find an 8R6 10w by Deulund...very expensive. I searched Mundorf, Caddock and others and only found 8R2 10w or 9R0 10w. Will the .4 lower or higher resistance change the sound or should I buy the Deulund? I also wanted to upgrade the 1R0 10w to a Mundorf. Mundorf has a 1R0 10W and a better quality M-resist rated at 20 watts. Is there a downside to using the 1R0 20w instead of the 1R0 10w? Thanks,

Is there a downside to using the 1R0 20w instead of the 1R0 10w?

Yes, only two drawbacks, it'll cost more and is bigger so will displace a tad more internal volume... unless mounted external. jk 😉

Add two values together to get the specific values required. I used Dale Precision non inductive 1% and or metal film types only. Carbon types produce too much noise and regular wirewound types add inductance. Outside of this don't spend too much, little if any improvement not worth the time or the money spent.

Vishay Dale resistors

Has anyone tried the Vishay Dale wire wound Power Resistors in the finned aluminum heat sink? Must they be mounted on a heat sink plate? The term Current Shunt is also used in their description. Does that mean they should not be installation in an audio crossover?

Thanks,

Have you measured them?

IME, the cheap resistors have a 10% tolerance and often measure at the lower end of the 10% variance. If you take one out and measure it you will probably find it is right around 8 ohms. The higher quality resistors are usually much higher tolerance so their 8 ohm is right around 8 ohms.

Graphite resistor

Hi,

In case you would like to try a graphite resistor, it is possible to make one yourself. The procedure might be a little tricky but hopefully it will be fun and with a good "learning-experience".

Pros: Way cheaper than the Duelunds, and you can make exactly the value you need in your cross-over.

Cons: Time consuming to make and the resistors are fragile.

The well-known Troels G. has made a nice description/recipe here:

GRAPHITE RESISTORS
