I recently decided that I need a new center channel for my home theater. I went through my collection of old parts and I found a pair of 5 1/4" speakers, Kevlar coned Versa-Tronics. A few years back these came out of a car that I had. They are pretty impressive looking...cast basket and all. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the surrounds had developed a few small tears in them....it almost looks like they had been cut. (worst one is about 1/2 inch long) Everything else on them looks great.
I searched around and I have found several places that offer foam replacements, but not rubber. I did see another post here that mentioned a place in Australia that had rubber surrounds, but I can't find any here in the states.
What I am wondering is if replaceing the rubber with foam would be a bad thing? I know this would affect the T/S parameters some, but I am thinking not by much. I am having trouble finding the parameters for these anyways....

Thanks all for your input!

If the surrounds are actually PVC vinylweld solvent can fix them,
alternatively rubber cement can be used for real rubber surrounds.
Changing PVC/rubber to foam is not a good idea, as termination
of the cone edge will change drastically and effect the midrange.
🙂 sreten.
