Hi, I have a Peavey KB 5 keyboard amplifier that i think needs new woofers. The amp was given to me by a friend who didn't want it anymore.

The 2 woofers make this really strange rattlie/muffling noise in the midranges. but sound ok when i place my thumbs on a certain spot of each cone to dampen the vibrations. I'm not sure what's wrong with the speakers. But i think i may have to replace them, but what should i get. the amp is 150 watts and the impedance the woofers is 16 Ohms and the horn is 8 Ohms. It's a really nice amp, just sounds bad currently and would be cheaper to replace the speakers than buy a new amp. Has been driving me crazy, so any help at all is appreciated. Thanks 😀

Are you in the USA?
First, isolate the problem. COnnect a different speaker cab to the amp chassis in place of the existing speakers. Just to verify the electronics sound OK or maybe have a problem. And it would be great to conect some other amp to those speakers to see if they react the same.
Pull the woofers and inspect them. Are the voice coils rubbing? Make sure there were no misplaced wires touching the rear surface of the cone. And you want to make sure if there is a buzz that it is the speaker itself and not a nearby cabinet buzz.
If you do need a new speaker, really, Peavey sells their parts at reasonable prices. Maybe not discounted, but not way overpriced like some places. And consider just replacing the bad speaker with another factory speaker. You can order direct from them.
if you want to explore the world of speakers, this is a keyboard amp, which is to say it is a miniature PA system. SO any full range PA type driver (as opposed to a bass guitar speaker) would be worth considering.

yea, i live in the states. I had already changed different speakers out and experimented to locate the problem. The 2 woofers are definitely the source of the problem. I don't know how to check the voice coils, though when i press on each woofer to see if the cone moves freely, and for each one i don't get much movement when i push in, though if i try it from the other side and push up, it has way more movement. Also, do you know of any places online where i could get some replacements without breaking the bank?
