I recently picked up a pair of JBL LSR32's with blown tweeters. A pair of new replacement tweeters would likely set me back about $500.00 (Canadian). I realize these are odd tweeters (as far as shape and design goes) and will be difficult to find more affordable replacements for, but does anyone happen to know if there are any alternative tweeters that might work in these monitors?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Hello,
May be, you could try "The speaker exchange"
JBL 053Ti Tweeter 123-10003-00X - Speaker Exchange

Thanks for the reference, but by the time you take into account the exchange rate in Canadian dollars, shipping, handling, duties, brokerage, and so on the price quickly rises to over $500.00 (Canadian) for a pair of these. I was wondering if there was a cheaper alternative out there somewhere.Hello,

Well, you could look at things that way, but since this is a DIY forum full of creative people who are always finding new ways of trying to do things or solve problems, then I thought it might be worth checking to see if someone else might have a more constructive suggestion.an altetnative : How much costs a plane ticket ?
Hi,
Its possible, but may be complicated to swap front plates
with another 1" dome tweeter. Ideally you want to know
Fs and Qts of the JBL and match them fairly closely.
The JBL has the first part of the oblate waveguide moulded in.
Theoretically you could modify a normal frontplate to be similar.
Perhaps that gasket pulls off to reveal the mounting screws.
There is a lot of guess work involved with non working units.

Check or call a couple of houses/shops that can repair them. If possible and not buying new ones.

I actually brought them to a local tech today and he said it would be difficult if not impossible to repair them because of the way they are glued together rather than using screws. He also did a quick test and said the voice coils are likely fried.
Hi,
Well if I was trying to do it on the cheap I'd probably try using a pair of these :
Dayton Audio DC25T-8 1" Titanium Dome Tweeter
Reuse the gasket on the front and jerry rig to use the original rear mounting arrangements.

Why would you ruin a truly fantastic speaker with willy-nilly parts substitutions? Treat 'em like the 3000 USD monitors they are and use the OEM tweeter.
Yeah, that's what I'm tending to think as well. Why would you ruin a truly fantastic speaker with willy-nilly parts substitutions? Treat 'em like the 3000 USD monitors they are and use the OEM tweeter.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
The replacement parts should set you back under $300.00 US, delivered. If you can't find them locally P.M. me.
Yeah, I've decided to take people's advice and am planning to order a set of tweeters from a JBL Pro Service Center across the river in Detroit. I'll provide an update when the parts arrive.
Well I picked up the new JBL tweeters for the LSR32's yesterday and I can confirm that it was definitely worth the investment. I compared the JBL's against my AR9LS (hooked up to a Luxman R-117) and while the AR's still sounded great (they still hold their own as very good speakers, if you ask me), the level of clarity and definition in the JBL's is at another level. The LSR's really are very, very fine speakers (at least in my limited experience). The AR's go lower (no surprise there), but the bass on the JBL's is much tighter, and the level of separation between instruments (and sounds) is amazing. These are definitely keepers, no question about that.
Some might recall that I started a post a while back about 'accurate' speakers. All I can say is that if this is what accurate speakers sound like, then I'm a big fan.
Now I have some more decisions to make about what goes where. Great fun... 😀
