It depends on the application but if you don't know the difference between a Darlington configuration and a regular transistor, you should probably not use one.😉
Could you show us a schematic, this way we could better judge. Maybe its possible on your application or we could recommend something else that could work.
Their use is as drivers, a little triky with these circuits especially transformer coupled ones.
I personally would rather try finding a transistor closer to the original.

Mje3055 should be okay. Kind of low on HFE, MJ15028 or MJ15030 would be better. Maybe TIP41. I suppose it depends on whats available.
