A Friend has given me her Navman to repair.
The micro USB socket had come loose and was rattling about inside.
The socket is soldered on with 5 pins and 4pads for the enclosing metal housing.
All the pads and all the pin contacts have pulled the pads off the PCB.
I can see, with high magnification, the broken ends of where most of the pads attach to the ground plane, or to the circuits.
Which pins NEED a connection to allow the Navman to work?
Pin1 is to a big solder pad and may be +ve power IN. @ top of pcb pic
Pin2 looks to be connected to a cap and then more circuit..
Pin3 looks to be connected to a cap and the rest of the circuit.
Pin4 seems to be not connected.
Pin5 looks to be connected to the ground plane.
I am thinking that soldering (and maybe gluing) the metal housing to the back plane for interference suppression, and just soldering a strand of wire from Pin1 to solder pad with cap and a strand of wire from pin5 to solder pad with cap.
Leaving pins2, 3 & 4 unconnected.

As far as I know you need four wires. Here is some information on USB wiring
