I'll be receiving microwave oven transformers today to be used as chokes in my diy Mofo, and I was wondering about the pros and cons of removing the unused secondaries (particularly the k-volt HV). Seems like doing so takes away any issues about possible interactions with the choke winding. What are the considerations?
My gut would be to leave them in. I've not seen a MOT with cut-out secondaries except when people are trying to turn them into welders or isolation transformers.
unused secondary/ies -leave it or remove- totally irrelevant, as long their ends are well isolated
one thing of more importance here is - removing or not so called "shunt" lam stacks - usually mounted in between primary and secondaries

I think it would be safer to leave them alone as they physically hold the larger windings in place and also hold the small pieces of shunt material in place. Just insulate the ends of the secondaries well. Btw, the secondaries make a HV version (circa 20x voltage gain) of the signal in the primary. I have always wondered if this could be used to drive an electrostatic speaker.
No, I never physically messed with my MOTs. Just left everything as is. I have watched videos of people removing the secondaries and shunts and realize that it is tricky thing to do.
I have few MOTs handy, just to mess with
one of these days, gonna to hacksaw secondary out and remove shunts
then will inform ya is there change of inductance, at least measured with my old trusty deck meter

My chokes use the primary of a triplite UPS power transformer. They measure about 55MH at less than an ohm. I re-arranged the I's and E's and put a gap in them. It took 2 to make one each. Seem to work well.
Not sure I have Photos. I can explain in a PM if you want. I fear I've already hijacked this thread. Apologies
