Rega RB250 Counterweight Stub thread

Someone kindly off loaded a damaged RB250 to me with a turntable some years ago and its been sitting around ever since. The damage relates to the stub end counterweight threads which appear to have been partially crossed. The original plastic stub was received attached but broken with the vendor blaming the courier.

I have now decided to attempt a partial refurb and purchased a tecnoweight hoping the metal thread may have been man-enough to ream through damaged section which is appears to be limited to the very initial section - possibly less than a 1/4 of turn. Unfortunately it has proved impossible to get the stub in so I need to undertake a partial re-tap.

Does anyone know the pitch of the thread which I beleive is an M12.

In addition I have noted there is a wire soldered across the bottom of the threaded section of the stub i.e. the section nearest the bearing. Is this standard? I suspect it may be the ground wire but thought this was normally fixed outside the length of the stub. I am slightly concerned that in re-tapping the thread I may damage the ground wire if this is what it is.
