I have a 400W metal halide bulb and I am thinking about using two cone reflectors and putting them end to end..(so it looks like a large metal egg) sticking the light in one side and fixing the condensor lens to the other (Reflector will be cut to fit the condensor perfectly) that way no light escapes and it is all going into the condensor lens.. Will that work, and will I have heating problems? I figure the light can't get any hotter than it already is.. 400W is 400W right?
just so long as it's cooled. Some of the exit-angles might be crazy but the proper lens *may* be able to handle that.
I've dealt a lot with HID lights, and enclosing it like that will just lead to premature bulb failure.
Essentially you'll be creating a mini oven to cook the bulb in... 😉
The idea does sound intriguing though, but I don't think it'll work that well in practice.
