Here is a nice 1U enclosure:
from Redco Audio.
Very simple clamshell design looks feeble but it's quite sturdy when it's all screwed together (and even with top off). It's probably not for the road but anything aluminium isn't going to be anyway.
A few important points are 1) unlike the hammond RMCS type enclosure which has channel style front and back, the top and bottom extend all the way to the front and back so you can have a simple flat panels made by cam-expert.com or fpe and they will just bolt on clean.
2) clearance is great as you can see. A lot of rack enclosures have limited inside clearance or flanges that surround the front and back that limit control placement. Of course you will need to use a countersink bit and flathead screws to mount everything because the top and bottom do extend to the full 1.75". And you probably cannot mount anything on the sides. At least not in the middle. So something like that OT pictured will have to be mounted on the back.
This one has an internal depth of over 6". I think there's also a 10" one. Only 1U apparently. I'm actually posting this so that maybe Redco will expand the line.
If you do order one (BTW they're cheap at $50 USD), look at their cable. If you remove the jacket from their snake cable (like RED TGS-04 4 channel multi-pair), the individual shielded cables are great for internal wiring of stuff that needs to be shielded.
More often than not, having 3 conductors is actually very useful for some reason. And there is a separate uninsulated wire for the shield so you can just cut off the braid. Much cleaner.
I have absolutely no affiliation with Redco BTW.
