Greeting!
I had a working Squeezebox Touch that just died on me. Logictech discontinued them and can not replace/repair the one I have, so I need a good/better substitute.
I was thinking that it may be better to use one of my Mac Minis to act as the server and then attach a USB DAC to get my analog out.
I have an iPad that could be used to run and select my library, but I hate iTunes and I have some FLAC files and some other high definition files that I don't think iTunes would support.
I don't know what would be a good library server, such as:
Amarra?
Pure Music?
Decibel?
VLC?
For the DAC I was considering the HRT Music Streamer II+.
I know this is a fast changing dynamic market, so I would be interested in hearing any recommendations of what the best or better route to go is.
The rest of my system is high-end tube amps and DIY speakers, so I would like to put together something that can make the most of those components.

I would also like to build a music streamer where the source will be coming from my Synology NAS via Lan connection, the streamer can either has a buillt-in scream and button for navigation or integrate with a iDevice for control, output in Spdif or USB 2.0 to external DAC. Can someone help in giving some HW and software direction.

Hardware wise, almost any modern computer will work. Things will get more complicated if you want fully silent machine. For cheap silent machine my main ingredient will be intel dn2800mt board, it's fanless and powered by external PSU.
Software wise, my preference is Foobar2000 with http and upnp components installed to allow remote controlling via iDevice or Android. I don't have iDevice but my experience with Android is very satisfying, I use Foobarcon as controller. Foobar can see your NAS as network share or as UPNP server.
For screen & control buttons, use Soundgraph iMon device. But I don't see the need to have screen if you can control it via tablet/smartphone.
I am completely satisfied with a pogoplug that runs debian (originally from squeezeplug.eu), Logitech Media Server, squeezelite as software player and a USB soundcard (currently an audio widget from this forum, but any USB soundcard works) and an android app to control the LMS from my phone. Cheap, stable, small, little power consumption, sounds great, easy to use. Some work to set it up though, and lacks the horsepower for DSP.
I just built a Pogoplug (under $30) running squeezelite; it is a player for your existing Squeezebox server. Others have gotten the server running on the same little box. You can plug in your favorite USB DAC or USB to SPDIF converter. I'm using the ODAC, and it has been fantastic (after I figured out the memory stick has to go in the front USB port). You'll also need a 4 GB USB stick. Full instructions are here.
The instructions are pretty straightforward--very little Linux experience is required (but doesn't hurt, of course).
In messing around with that little box, I've even got it to support Remote Desktop along with a lightweight desktop environment. Just amazing for about $30.

I just did a DIY music streamer using an RaspberryPi, with a small cheap USB DAC attached to it. The player is SqueezePlug/SqueezeLite and the server is Squeezebox. My Music are mix MP3/FLAC store on my NAS (DIY NAS4Free).
Rasperry sounds interesting, but you should explain as well the limitations of this...I read somewhere no Hires for example...
I tried a lot of different boards and software on the windows and MAC OS front...at the end the most muscial setup which plays everything is Alix 1 board with SoTM USB card running MPDPUP with Mpad as Ipad remote control.

I went for a VIA EPIA board of ebay (me6000) I think, I also got a case (Silverstone LC05), all in it came to under £50. It's a silent motherboard and PSU, all I added was a hard drive.
I run Bodhi Linux on it with just VLC media player installed as this can be configured to route straight to a USB dac, bypassing any mixers etc.
I'm very happy with it, it boots fully in seconds and I control it with my android phone - perfect. The case looks pretty good on the rack as well!
I tried Tiny XP with foobar but the motherboard struggled streaming audio and stuttered using kernal streaming (I suspect the VIA processors aren't fully supported), also Debian and Ubuntu took ages to boot and operate. Bodhi linux has worked out well, though on this motherboard you wouldn't want to do much else with it!

The products look quite impressive tho not sure of the costs.
Recently I have purchased a Quad Wandboard and installed SOA ( Squeeze on Arch). It works quite well and has a Squeeze server and player in built. It has SPDIF optical output or you could connect a USB DAC to it too. I have connected it up to my NAS drive and it works quite ok.
In fact any small form factor PC and a USB to SPDIF converter is good to use.

Example:
1. A mini pc that run a Daphile Linux version that recognize all the usb receivers.
2. The usb streaming that all Synology NAS have from usb3 outputs, streaming in hi resolution files easy and nice. The most usb receivers are compatible with this.
