Long story short, my Cerwin Vega CVT-300S from 15 years ago has a bad power side, ad it has a constant hum that I can't seem to kill.
Along the way of diagnosis, I found that one of the 2 voice coils in my likewise 15 year old Adire Audio Shiva has an open in it.
My enclosure is very large and tuned subsonic, almost behaves like an IB.
I have been talking to the new owners of Adire, and I'm all but ready to turn the key on a 15" tumult. They can't recone the old shivas for whatever reason and I can't fault them for that.
I feel kind of crazy for going to a Tumult, but I built the enclosure to be a BAMF. With both components having failed...I might as well build the BAMF I designed it to be. They are offering me $100 off on the tumult for pre-sale, so that kind of makes my mind up too. Am I making a bad decision?
Because of the enclosure situation, I highly doubt the Tumult will need all 1,000 watts to use the 34mm Xmax. They and I kind of concurred in the 500W neighborhood. I do know for a fact that I have bottomed my Shiva at 300W (100% rated power), so the failed coil doesn't surprise me.
What is the most economical 500W plate amp? I see that Parts Express has a 500W Dayton amp, but i don't know anything about Dayton other than being a house brand generic, for lack of better turn. Reviews are shakey at best. A Mackie 2850 take-out has been suggested by a friend, but I think 800W will be a little overdriving for my enclosure. A Mackie Thump series takeout (600W) might be more suited, if I can find one.
I could use some suggestions on both fronts.
TL;DR
Enclosure is 22" x 24" x 26" interior (7.94 cuft less driver/amp/port...about 7.5 cuft functional)
Port is 4" diameter x 19" long (tuned approx 18hz)
15" Tumult is rated 1000W
Enclosure de-rates driver from 1000W to 500W to nearly reach Xmax
Best 500W amp?
