Rear projection DLP big screen TVs

Has anyone ever made money building and selling rear projection DLP big screen tvs?

I was thinking of making 80 inch big screen Tvs cheap and affordable for almost anyone to own.Something lightweight and easily accessable for nearly anyone. Of course the hard part now is figuring out how it's all actually gonna work out...:xeye:
just a big enclosure that houses some mirrors,a frensel and a DLP projector! I know..i know..it's not that easy bub! 😀

just curious if anyone has actually made good money of building and selling these things..
thanks

Yes, I've thought of it, and yes it's NOT that easy (it's the opposite). However, you're not gonna find an 80" fresnel screen that is remotely "affordable". You can have a screen that will do good in light to moderate ambient light, but it will not be on the same level as the black screens used for RPTVs.

Your only option is to use a 2.0 or less gain dark gray diffusion screen and to setup a complicated mirror setup. DLP projectors are generally very long throw compared to DLP rear projection tvs which are EXTREMELY short throw (meaning they throw very large images from very short distances).

With an average DLP projector you'll probably need at least a 3 mirror setup inside about a 2.5-3' (or more) depth enclosure.

There is ONE projector out that has short enough throw to easily do large rear projection (80-134") and that is the Toshiba ET20U which can throw a 100" diagonal 16:9 image from about 3.9' away. How good it is I don't know. It's a 480p unit and costs about $900 or more, so it's pricey for a 480p unit in this day and age.

WOW -80/100 inch image with only 3 ft?
I wonder how much it would be with 8-10 ft?
I might have to look into that projector.

I was also thinking about modifying the actual lens scope itself so that it throws a large enough image in a short ammount of space. Not sure who mods them out or if it's even an option.

Right now though I am at a point where I am tired of my 80 inch image and working on creating a home theater where the entire wall is going to be an image, from one side of the wall to the other.A perfect 16.9 image at 15 something ft. diagnal lol

I have already projected it soo far with my 480p infocus but it's horribly washed out and pixalated like a MoFo.I am looking at the Mitsubishi 3000hd 720p 1000 lumens 4500:1 contrast for $1500ish to complete the job..I will also be adding a line doubler and DVD with upconversion.I know it's not exactly DIY but tell me that when I am putting up the wall paper, painting the walls and installing all the equitment lol! :smash:
