I have had these speakers for a while and think there pretty decent sounding speakers would good clarity and punch. It's been recently pointed out to me that they do not have the original drivers (drivers are white,original were black) and sure enough after pulling one of the 4 sub woofers they are Sony model 1-503-806-1. They are stamped 14 ohms/50 watts max.
I understand that replacement speakers were discontinued from Radio Shack
and they recommended either Pioneer or Sony as replacements. The 14 OHM
rating has me perplexed as I believe the original were 16 OHMS.
Please excuse my ignorance on this subject. My questions are as follows:
Is this difference in ohm rating a cause for concern ? Are these the best replacement speakers? Is there better speakers for this application ? I cant find any 10 inch sub w 16 OHM rating. Can I wire two 8 ohm speakers in together,as has been suggested,does that make the load 16 OHM? Again, they sound pretty good, so I do not want to replace the speakers for a lot
of $$$ unless a significant improvement in sound results.

Apparently not since you say they perform pretty decent.
Don't know. My guess is that if RS suggested the Pioneer or Sony, then that's probably the best you're going to do without learning the art of speaker design at a fairly advanced level before you can even begin your search if you can't find the woofer's actual T/S specs plus its measured frequency and impedance responses for reference.
I assume they used 16 ohm woofers so that they could wire them in parallel to make the bass section an 8 ohm load; so no, you don't want to wire [2] 8 ohm woofers in series to make a 16 ohm load.
Really, what you want to do goes well beyond an amateur's knowledge/skills/tools and in the end not worth the effort unless you luck up on finding some OEM woofers in good condition, which is highly unlikely at this late date.
Better to save up to DIY some new speakers [or at least assemble kits] that will make these sound like the cheap, so-so performers they are.
