Hi Everybody,
I have only just found this forum today and will be looking through a lot of post as soon as I stop this post.
But I have an old retro system, Sansui 771 Receiver being my main Amplification at the moment.
Seeing this video on YouTube a few days ago on RCA caps noise stoppers
RCA, Phono Plugs Caps Noise Stoppers, Do they work ! channel leakage, Vintage hifi audio stereo - YouTube
Was wondering if they really do anything or not, as my unit seems to suffer from what he is saying
Any thought would be good as think of ordering a few sets
Regards
Rav

Hello,
Believe this accessory is among those that sound promising, but deliver nothing useful.
I have had all kinds of stereo equipment over the decades and never had a problem without them, and the homemade ones (shorting plugs) I made did not make any difference I could tell.
Marketing can make pretty much anything sound great, but so much is total hot air trying to get others money. IMHO.
Regards,
Greg

There is always somebody out there wanting to make a fast buck .
Advertisements say-
stops ingress of dust/water/insects /children tampering / and RFI ?---to stop RFI you would need a complete short to earth .
All the same they seem to be selling like hotcakes so I have to compliment the guy who thought this up will obviously end up the $$$ billionaire owner of a worldwide conglomerate , the mark 11 version will have a built in wi-fi to feed info to (paying ) third parties .
It makes you wonder how all those amps already on the market and praised to the skies for their specs and sound got away with obviously "inferior " products if they didn't come with those "cutting edge " , invaluable-indispensable hi-fi products .
TV adverts will appear- ( two neighbors ) hey Tom ! I just fitted those new phono caps - Tom- ( looking and feeling inferior ) gee whiz ! I must get onto Amazon /eBay etc and buy a bunch .

Hi
Thanks for the quick replies, I could see what they guy was trying to say and it kind of made sense grounding the inputs your not using.
But if there is no proof then that is some money saved.
I have just looked at he's soft start board video and that peeked my interest as I have 2 amps that the speakers thud when turning on.
But installation does not look easy.
Thanks again

We should clearly distinguish between RCA Dust Caps and RCA Shorting Plugs.
The former are unlikely to exclude RF as is often claimed.
The latter may bring some benefits when used with phono inputs, whose high sensitivity is capable of amplifying any low level noise pick up. Some do not produce a direct short, but internally introduce a resistor of a few kiloOhms between signal and earth. I have no measurements to confirm of deny their efficacy.
However, if the phono input is not selected, aren't the phono sockets safely out of circuit anyway?
At least, neither device can do any harm.

I may get some anyway now, even with my AUX input not selected I still can hear it faintly if playing in between track on my record when Phono input is selected if volume is halfway ish.
Just tried it on 2 other amps for a matter of interest and can faintly hear it on them, so even with input not selected it still picks it up, must be the select switch leaking maybe
But still thought the blokes Soft Start board is not a bad idea, slowly turning an old amp on

I would think the answer to that problem is only to have one input playing live at a time, Rav!
You're correct in thinking that it is something to do with internal signal leakage to the sensitive phono circuitry.
If you must buy, go for the shorting plug type.

I can attest that shorting plugs do work, but whether you can benefit from them depends on your preamp. My vintage Counterpoint preamp has the RCA jacks soldered directly on the PCB. Signals are routed to a selector on the front panel. There is a lot of coupling between the traces from the different inputs, especially at higher frequencies. I once measured that the cross-talk was no better than 40dB at 1 KHz. Would be much worse at higher frequencies. With the shorting plugs, I could still hear the unselected sources, but I would need to turn up the volume a bit to be able to hear them, which is a significant improvement over not having the plugs. If you do not have cross-talk issue, then the plugs would not do anything.

- RCA phono connector caps/shorts do they work?
