I've got a set of old Radio Shack speakers. They're labeled RCA cat# 40-5000, which I believe are identical to the old Optimus 7, which are the same as the even older Minimus 7. One of them dropped and the tweeter assembly broke off its mounting plate. Does anyone know where I might find an identical replacement tweeter?

weird
Those are quite different tweeters to the ones in my minumus 7's.
The 7's I own use a 1" soft dome, with a rectangular face/mounting plate.
Yours look very similar to the tweeters often sold as part of buyouts from parts express, and very similar to the tweeters Nelson Pass was giving away for a while. I'm not presently at home, but when I get back from my thanksgiving trip I'll try and remember to get some of them out of the box and take a picture for comparison.

What is the dome diameter -- tyhiose are either Audax (or one of the zillions of clones that followed), thry cam in 2 sizes and in many versions.
The version i most often use is frame ApexJr, but you might have to fiddle with the mounting. You should also be able to fins some with the same face plate. )i just put one away the other day)

I think you're right. They aren't from the 7. The speaker is smaller than the 7, but the die cast chassis construction appear nearly the same. Out of my set of five, two are labeled Optimus and three are RCA. Radio Shack seems to suggest they were the model RCA PRO-X33AV.
Where would I measure to specify the dome size? The outside is maybe ~25mm (1") but the actual dome part is maybe 12mm (1/2").
Cosmetically, you'd never be able to tell if I just stuck the pieces back together and epoxied them. Is it going to mess with the sound too much? Can I try to pull the dome back out? It's not as if they were exceptionally high fidelity speakers in the first place, but it'd be nice if the center channel matched the left and right.

That tweeter (minus the escutcheon) looks almost identical to those used in the Infinity MICROII satellites. I am trying to find suitable replacements for a pair of these speakers but so far have had no luck. Infinity repair agents say they can't help either. So, if anyone can assist with further info I would be pleased to know about it.
BTW, the outer diameter of the plastic frame on the ones I have is just under 48mm.

Many posts on modifying and improving 'Minimus 7's" from memory most of them condcerned XO but a couple mentioned replacing the tweeter with the Vifa neo D26NC, saying the benefits outwayed the cost as the woofers in these were usually reasonable.
Jaycar in Oz have discontinued a tweeter that appears to be a direct drop in, must be some around in E###

I doubt you'll be able to find an exact replacement for that tweeter. Radioshack outsourced those drivers from all around the world during the life of the minimus 7. Not all were created equal during that time.
I've owned 3 pairs of minimus 7's and none of them had the same drivers. The tweeters were the most obvious difference as some of them had completely different mounting flanges from each other. So you'll probably find something that fits, but it probably won't be to the same spec as the drivers made during that time period.

Audax called then 10mm & 14mm... they were, i believe, just taking about the inner dome. I'd get a pair of the ApexJr tweeters and mod the existing face play so you can use that to fix the tweeter to the box... shipping will be more than the tweeters )i've gone thru a 100 some of these).

Dave wouldn't the "Sonance" tweeter with the flat face plate be easier to retofit?? by bringing the woofer out 5mm if needed, nice smooth graph comparitively good Fs too.
I wish we had that company here

I could do with your advice on my query in Loudspeakers on tweaks for woofers
cab you point me to the thread ... it wasn't obvious.

Sorry Dave, I should have done that first off.
Basket tricks needed but not Full Range, so I don't know if that makes a difference

Ty, I discovered an almost identical tweeter in my local Altronics store only yesterday. It is stock code C3010 and is nominally known as a "20mm mylar domed tweeter".

You would need to cut away part of the escutcheon to suit your speaker but other than that it should work perfectly. For my application I was able to remove the escutcheon and clean off the adhesive so that it would fit into the Infinity MICRO2's - it fits perfectly BTW. Since the Altronics item is not shielded I removed the magnets from the back of the originals and super=glued them on the new ones.
I know you aren't "down-under" but I am sure that there would be a number of distributors in the US for an identical item. Hopefully you can locate one.
Funny how we expect that small things should be cheaper,
$USD 9, has the exchange rate improved that much ??

Yep. The China and Japan markets for our minerals dropped off dramatically when the US sponsored cheap home loans debacle hit. With the current global financial crisis our $ went from around US$0.96 to US$0.65 cents in the blink of an eye.
Weird ain't it? the americans have a multi trillion dollar deficet and we have a vey small surplus but OUR dollar has no value??
But then again water is the most valuable commodity of all and we are into year 9 of our 3 year drought, it does make a weird kind of sense.
I bought a computer game the otherday and a bottle of mineral water and the mineral water was the same cost about $6 each

There is at least 1 finiancial instrument that was being sold that was WAY scarier than the mortgages (althou the Morts triggered the exposing of those). Our dollar went from essentially par to 0.82 cents... CAD seems directly ties to the price of oil (Canada being the US's largest supplier of oil)... price at the pump went from as high as $1.50/litre to now threatening $0.80 and people chear about that as the price of hard goods like electronics and stuff go up 20%... sad.
