I am interested in doing some digital crossover for speaker testing, and don't want the stand-alone type (such as minidisp).
Is there any good (&cheap) program that allows doing x-over on a PC? what kind of hardware do I need, a 4 channel sound card?
Thanks for any advise

Hello.
You can check my topic - http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/pc-based/251916-win7-streaming-one-output-another.html
EMU based Soundard + kx driverst is the easiest (and safe) way to do it, if its ok for you that connection to amp will be analog.
Other way ( 100% free) is to use VB audio cable as loopback VB-Audio Virtual Cable
and use VST Plugins for crossover. I used REAPER as vst host and dual linkwitz-riley plugins KVR: Dual Linkwitz-Riley Filters by Christian Budde - Details

Thanks PPP!
the dual_linkwitz_riley_filter is interesting, how does it do the output? I will still need a sound card with at least 4 output channels, right?

And, there's one you can do with a PC and all free software: Digital Crossover/EQ with Open-Source Software: HOWTO | Richard's Stuff
I use this myself, and am pleased with the results.

Yes, and amplifier with 4 separate channels.I will still need a sound card with at least 4 output channels, right?
You set Virtual audio device, as default device in control pannel, Then with VST Host ( Reaper ) You can route audio to your soundcard hardware outputs and add effects from plugins to each channelhow does it do the output?
Here are some software crossovers that I found while experimenting a couple years ago.
Sjeng - chess, audio and misc. software
foo_dsp_xover | Free Audio & Video software downloads at SourceForge.net
blogohl: Software and VST plugins (start here)
FIR Active crossover plugin for foobar2000.exe (FIR, sounds good)
RS-MET
Digital Room Correction | Free Audio & Video software downloads at SourceForge.net (powerful, but steep learning curve)
I used a few different hosts to run some of the plugins and manipulate flow of audio in the PC:
http://www.foobar2000.org/
BIDULE :: Modular Audio Tool :: VST/AU Host and Plugin, Rewire, OSC,
VSTHost
REAPER | Audio Production Without Limits
AudioMulch is software for live performance, audio processing, sound design and music composition. (This one worked best for me.)
When I do another active crossover speaker project, I will just buy Acourate and JRiver and be done with it.
