I have built several USB cables and know the pin out configuration. My question centers around a automotive wideband gauge with data out. The manufacture shows how to wire a RS 232 plug using only the data wire and a ground. I would like to have a panel mounted USB socket output port rather than a RS 232 for ease of monitoring with a laptop.
My question is will the socket wired with only data and ground to the appropriate posts be enough to transfer the data to the computer using a standard USB cable? Thank

USB is a differential (balanced) signal , rs232 is not, and they are at different voltage levels anyway.
What is/are the spec/details on the gauge?

Two completely different standards electrically and datawise.
You can buy USB to RS232 converters.
You can buy USB to RS232 converters.
The info provided on the data stream are as follows
Bits per second - 9600
Data bits - 8
Parity - None
Stop bits - 1
Flow control - Hardware

That's clearly rs232 serial protocol, just buy a RS232-usb converter and wire that in , it will also need power as it has a chip on board
Thanks. RS 232 panel mount female connector ordered
You could build the conversion into the car, so you then have a USB on the dash (or whereever) and read it out from that
