Say If I have a small LCD such as 5" than I have a huge bulb such as one of those metal halide ones, there would be a lot of light going around the LCD right? Would that affect in any way the picture?
I want to build a fairly small LCD projector thats why im asking

You might want to sign up at www.diyprojection.com. We are working on a way of modifing the lcd backlight so it will be super bright. Currently, with an unmodded backlight and a delta iv lens, you can project a 5 foot image that is a little brighter than the 100" bigscreen tv thing. Some pros to having a superbright backlight rather than a huge fluorex or matal halide setup, is the fact that it would be small. The size of your projector would be the size of a delta iv lens. I hope this helps you out a bit.

Good luck,
Phil

if u intend on using a big lite.. a mh. then u will have alot of wated light. You need to make sure that the wasted light doesnt escape your enclosure that is if u r going with the enclosure design. The only light that should escape is the one that passes thru yer lens, and the light that passes through any vents or fan openings. I havent built my projector yet, but that is my theory anyways.
