Putting an "amp in a pedal" into a larger box with normal sized controls?

For about $50 there are a number of "amp in a pedal" type units that have minaturised control knobs so that they fit within the confines of a pedal sized form factor.

To improve the ergonomics, does anyone know if these types of effects units are easily dismantable so that external, normal sized potentiometers can be fitted to the front panel of a larger box?

Am I going to be defeated by tiny surface mount components that are increasingly prevalent in consumer hardware?

One man's easy is another man's bane. You would run leads off the board to the controls, the controls would not be surface mount. Anything can be done, what is easy to you is hard to gauge.
