Psone Projector : Couple Of Questions About Optics

hi guys
im about to build my first projector using the familier psone lcd screen
and i ran into couple of problems

the parts i already got :
Lcd :
Psone Lcd With The Vga Mod

Lens :
The Known 290MM Fujinon Copy Lens From SurplusShed

Light :
Osram 150W Hqi-ts Ndl Natural White ( Color Temp - 4200K ) - With Built-in Uv Filter

Reflector :
A Symmetric Reflector I Got Out Of Halogen Projector Lamp ( Something Like This :
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
)

ok now the problems
i ordered with the lens 2 mirrors which turned out to be not the right size ( the right size is sold out :\ )
and i cant find fresnels in my country ( office depot stop supplying them here and no one else got them )

i got a really low throwing distance ( wall to projection - 3.3 meters )
so without mirrors the projection will be even smaller than i planned

so i got 3 questions :
1.which fresnels should i choose for my setup? i have to use un-split setup because i got a window in front of the projection area
2.the reflector is good? if not which should i buy?
3.where can i buy on the net the fresnels , reflector , and mirrors ? i need a site which accepts paypal and got no problems sending to israel

thx in advance
ofir 🙂

Hi,
According to the data you supplied, you will have a 52 inch projection image. This is a pretty good size for a psone lcd projector. With a 290mm lens, I would use roughly a 300/300, or 330/330 fresnel combination. Several people have gotten good results using page magnifiers with psone lcd's. I am personally going to assemble mine tonight and I will be using page magnifiers with roughly a 330mm F.L. You can put them together right behind the lcd, and you should get pretty good results. Hope this helps!

hi shardian
yeh i know most ppl use page magnifiers and i was going to use them too
i already got one last year from office depot when i built the 150" inch tv plans ( its scrached now so i cant use it )
the problem is they stopped importing it to my country for some reason
and also no other store got it
so i have to order from the net
and if i already order i want to order the good quality fresnels and not the page magnifiers

the projection size u mentioned is not correct cuz u didnt used the box size ( which depends on the fresnels + mirrors + the fact that im using an un-split design )

i hope ull assemble ur projector soon
i would love to see the results 🙂
good luck and thx for ur help

Have a look at exclusiv-online.com's website. They have the fresnels you need, along with a much better reflector (get rid of that one you have!), a pre-condensor lens, and an IR filter.

They accept Paypal and quote shipping rates to Israel, so I don't think you would have any problems.

Don't worry about having a small image: Even with the VGA mod, the PSone LCD still has such low resolution that you would not like a large image from a close viewing distance. It will be interesting to see if you settle for the PSone results, or if you decide to upgrade to a Lilliput 7" LCD in the near future.

Maybe you can make your PSone projector without cutting the fresnels. Then you could change from the 5" PSone to the 7" Lilliput just by changing the LCD.

hi guy
thx for the site

which fresnels should i buy? the 160/305 package?
http://www.exclusiv-online.com/shop/index.php?main=product&art=FD210

and do i really need a better reflector , pre-condenser lens and ir filter? im trying to do the project as low-cost as i can

hmm also i saw some good results with the psone screen with 50" picture which thats exactly what im trying to achive
i dont need a bigger picture and i also dont have money or time to spend on this so no upgrade
im joining the army in 20 days so i need to get this over with as fast as i can

thx again man 🙂

quick results!

The 160/305 pair of fresnels would work fine. With a 125" throw distance, you should get about a 50" image. Then your LCD to lens distance will be about 319 mm. With a split fresnel design, you can put the 305 mm fresnel 14 mm after the LCD and the arc image should be perfectly placed in the middle of the projection lens. That is ideal.

You can run without a reflector. I have a very precise one with a polished silver surface, and it only adds about 22% to my lumen output. But the reflector you have will not do you any good. It will just send more light through the LCD in directions that won't get through the lens.

With a 5" LCD, you would get a MUCH brighter image with a precondensor lens. But even without it, it would be okay in a dark room. Just keep in mind that you can improve the brightness by about 4 times later, by adding the right pre-condensor lens.

You may be able to get by without IR filtering, since you are only using a 150 Watt MH lamp. You can check the LCD and fresnel temperatures when you first run it. If they get too hot, the fresnels will melt and the LCD will go black in the center. If that happens, shut down immediately but leave the fan(s) running. Your LCD can probably recover. A really cheap fix might just be a piece of window glass 1 to 10 cm before the fresnels. Better would be some selective window film, that blocks most of the heat but passes light. I would imagine that is pretty common in Israel! Maybe you could even talk somebody into giving you a free sample large enough for your projector.

Without UV filtering, your acrylic fresnels will turn yellow over time, and your LCD will accumulate similar damage. Probably not something you would notice for a while. You can buy a UV filter sheet or a piece of Lexan XL10 to remove 99.9% of the UV. (Both are under $10 US.) Or maybe that window film I mentioned will also block UV.
