I write the possible numbers in the squares with a pencil and rub them out as I go. My wife writes outside the border, she won't finish one that I've started.
OK, I tried that today. I find it harder. Not just the same problem as you, the dots are harder to erase and to keep the background easy to read.
I think removing them is important, eg if you have two squares in one row that can be either 2 or 7, then you can remove these two numbers from elsewhere in the row. It doesn't usually come down to this option until you've already removed some, unless you are playing an easy one.

I do all possible combinations in my head, filling the squares with small numbers distracts me from other options. I focus too much on them.

I find one that not only helps solving, it also makes it step by step, so you can understand it and also explains the best strategy for such a case.
