Powered Mixer Recommendation

Greetings- We purchased one of those compact JBL EON 210P PAs some years back. The powered mixer conked-out and the repair technician said that the JBL units have a history of problems with unreliability and recommended that we replace the head with something like the one that comes with the Fender Passport. Like the JBL 210, the Passports seem to only come as a package unit (with speakers), plus, my wife would like something that might project subtle nuances with her vocals. We're looking for a powered mixer that will be compatible with the JBL speakers (the old head had an output of 300W, 150w per speaker/stereo). The main purpose it will be used for is my wife's vocal coaching class and rare small/medium cafe performances. The most that we'll ever run through it is 2 vocal mics and a single direct line guitar. Specs we're hoping to achieve: 4-6 channels, basic built-in effects and controls (bass, mid, treble, reverb, etc.), and something with a USB port for running to/from the computer. Any suggestions or recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated 🙂 Thanks in advance.

The problem with buying another powered mixer is you are still stuck with those horrid EON speakers and if they don't meet your expectations for detailed sound a new mixer won't help that.
The market has changed and the new standard in portable PA is with self powered speakers so I'd suggest you cut your losses and buy one of those and a small table top mixer with the functionality you want. I don't know what your budget is but on the lowend I'd suggest a Yamaha DBR10 and MG10XU, there are lots of similar looking products out there for even less money but reliability is the corner they cut to deliver at the lower price point, and Yamaha gear has a reputation for clean detailed sound. If you are determined to stick with the all-in-one format the Yamaha Stagepas series sets the performance benchmark IMO.

Conanski- Just the help I was looking for, thanks! Yes, the big plastic boxes that JBL refers to as speakers provide a fedelity about 1 step above a giant transister radio. Whether or not our bank account agrees, an upgrade makes sense.

I mostly agree with conanski. If more clarity and nuances are needed, change the whole system. Depending on where you live, get a look also at the RCF art310 (the mkIII can be found quite cheap right now) and the Soundcraft Notepad-12FX for example (that would be 250€ cheaper at Thomann than the yamaha gear for me but that will be quite different in another country).

But if you stick with the eon speakers, I would just get a Behringer PMP 560M. No USB though.

Check out the Yamaha Stagepas new 600BT or the older cheaper 400.
There is a new 1K version but haven't heard them. I don't like the sound of column speakers, but one time I saw a guy playing guitar in a shopping mall with a Bose L1 system and I liked it.
