Power supply capacitor top caved in?

Over the decades I've seen a few electrolytic capacitors bulge on the top from misuse but have never seen one where the top caved in.

It's a Sanyo 1000uF 35V from a eBay source (part of a kit) that was being used in a ±12VDC power supply. The positive side rail was fine but negative rail was not correct and IIRC was around +6VDC. I thought it was the 7912 reg (local Jaycar source) but saw the top of the cap had caved in (was flat on installation). In the end I changed the reg and both caps.

Caved in tops common?
