Hello,

I'm french and it's my first time here

Here is my question, I have a Sony amplifier TA FA 777ES dating from 1999/2000 but which do not have a motorized potentiometer so no remote. I would like to know whether you think it would be possible to replace the original one by a motorized ?

-Someone has already did it before ?
-How to choose a remote and an IR receiver that will work with ?

Here are some pictures

It's a panasonic potentiometer :

Do you think the printed circuit board allow a motorized potentiometer ?
It's a 120Kohms potentiometer, what is the consequence ?
What king of good motorized potentiometer a need to choose ?

Thank you in advance

It is not difficult, in principle at least, to replace that dual potentiometer with a motorized type and add a remote control kit (the hand remote + IR sensor, decoder chip and motor controller).
Here are some available motorised ALPS pots (ex-Germany) http://stores.ebay.com.au/familygate

The problem that I see is compatibility:
1. The pitch of the pot. terminals is different to commonly available types of stereo motorised pots such as ALPS RK271 series. It may be that you need to fabricate a new PCB or make a suitable sub-board from matrix board.
2. Good quality motorized pots with loudness control taps, such as in the 4 pin type shown, are not easily available any more.
3. You need to drill a hole in the front panel and fit a bezel and mounting bracket for an IR sensor.
4. Many modern remote controllers use much cheaper, digital control rotary encoders with electronic volume control chips, not pots. This means there will be fewer affordable sources for traditional stereo, carbon track pots.
5. It will be quite a chore buying suitable items, fitting and making sure they work correctly in your amplifier. Prior experience with building audio projects would be essential.

Personally, I would leave the amplifier alone - buy a remote control preamp and operate the volume, bass, treble and input selection as well with that. I found excellent results with even cheap, ready-built kits for as low as ~ € 80. If the handpieces on recent kits of parts were decent, I'd recommend some. 🙂
