Please suggest drivers for a 3-way speaker build

Can anyone suggest the drivers I must use to build a 3-way Floorstanding stereo speakers. I can get the required cabinet made and the cross-over designed and built to suit the speakers. I am looking to build an audiophile quality set with a budget of around $1000 for the speaker units alone. This set will be used to listen to music. The amplifier I have in mind is a Class-A Jean Hiraga 30 Watts per channel. The drivers will have to be high efficiency ones.

Woofer: The max diameter I have in mind is 12 inches,
Mid: Should I use an elliptical speaker (6 x 4) or a normal 6in round,
Tweeter: Should I use a horn or a ribbon tweeter for the best sound,
are the questions I need answers to.

What make and models of the speaker units would you recommend.

The usual advice on here is to go with a trusted design for your first build.

Here is a couple of places to look -

DIY-Loudspeakers - this has a section on high efficiency speakers
Speaker Design Works
Tarkus - undefinition
Zaph|Audio

Also search Paul Carmondy and Jeff Bagby for other designs.

Also be aware that the cost of the drivers is only part of the cost, the crossover parts can be almost as much if it is higher order/more complicated and using higher quality parts.

Here's my pick for that budget.
Satori WO24P-4
Satori MR16P-4 or possibly MR13P-4
Any number of tweeters, Aurum Cantus AST, new Satori TW29DM or SB ceramic.

Nice, something like this - SBA-941

You could either make it into a floorstander with dead space underneath, or use that space for a second WO24P but that would need a crossover redesign.

This would also do the job nicely, looks like about 88db sensitivity - SBAcoustics 10

As mentioned- build a proven design. Speakers are WAY harder than people think. If you build your own from scratch, 90% of people will learn enough during the process to realize they designed it "wrong", and will have to build more.

Tried and true designs you might still get the urge to experiment more but you'll at least be able to have a reliable reference.

What do you guys think about using Beyma speakers?

For music, my project will be centered around pro-audio style drivers for the midrange. See my thread on the War of the 10" monster midbasses, and your question about Beyma will be answered.

For the highs, I am going an AMT route for the great combination of ruggedness, power handling, transient capability, and ultra low distortion. Keep an eye out soon for an ultimate AMT showdown thread! Very excited about it!.

For the lows, I am going for multiple 10" woofers with multiple passive radiators instead of a single large woofer due to the required specific form-factor.

There's really 2 paths here:

1. Quick - build a proven design by writing down your design constraints (sensitivity, driver size, extension = F3/F10 in room etc...)

2. Longer but you get your own - add $200 to your budget to invest in measuring gear and the time to learn. you can do a good 3 way first up (I know, I have 🙂 but you need to do a lot of reading and practice your measurement techniques on existing speakers you have.

PS: What sort of music do you listen to?
