playstation 2 with USB DAC?

I'm not sure if this is a crazy idea, and I couldn't find anything discussed already, but I'm thinking of using a PS2 as a source - not the playstation, which I know can be a great CD transport, but a playstation 2.

Why? As well as games, it can play CD, DVD, and there is a player capable of playing FLAC, ogg, etc. Or you can put linux, or freeBSD on it. It can read stuff from a USB external HD, or over the network. It displays on your TV, and has a remote control. It's cheap ($80 on ebay). I think the missing element is probably the stock audio quality? (I don't own one, so I'm just guessing).

However, it looks like PS2 supports USB-audio, because you can get a USB headset for it.
So the question is, can you plug in a decent USB DAC, and get it working with the SMS media player, or under linux/freeBSD? Anyone tried?

This is an interesting idea.
I haven't tried using a USB dac, but I'm in search of a cheap optical/toslink dac to use the PS2's digital out.
I'm currently using my PS2 as a network media player, with SMS media player and my PC. It works well but I'd like to improve the sound by taking advantage of the PS2's optical output.
