When they say the diaphragm / voice coil can't ground the magnetic circuit is probably completely on one side of the voice coil, which is at the edge of the diaphragm.

I had a brief trawl using some patent literature searches at esp@ce, but could not find anything that appeared to correspond with the minimal description offered on the website.
What is notable, is a huge number of planar transducer concepts for audio, most of which are aimed at some particular, "low fidelity" application, but solve a different problem e.g. minimal space occupancy.
