Can anyone tell me what would be involved to convert a Planar 78 to play 33's.
I just saw one for $60. I think is worth buying just for the RB250. Any thoughts.
Thanks,
Rick

Hi,
presumably you would need to replace the cartridge or its
stylus, and fit the smaller two step 33/45 rega motor pulley.

Is the tone arm wiring the same for mono and stereo? Will I be able to just switch the cart?
Just a pully swap? That sounds easy enough. I was expecting a motor swap.
Thanks

Hi,
I assumed Rega don't have a special 78 motor.
Most mono cartridges now have stereo pins but are internally shorted.
So the RB250 should be entirely standard.
If the arm is actually mono, then you'd need to desolder a link in the armbase.

Is this real? I have never heard of a 78 rpm Rega? I had a Rega Planar 3 for years and it could only do 33 and 45.
I just went and picked it up. Score for $60.
It lookes identical to the P2 except for the name on it. The clips at the cart are just soldered together, so that's an easy fix. I'll just have to turn a pully tonight on my mini lathe and I'll be rockin' out.
Thanks,
Rick

Very real.....Is this real? I have never heard of a 78 rpm Rega?
Seems like a bargain of note at USD60.00
Anybody know what the motor RPM is?
I measured the motor pulley at 13.75mm and the platter pulley at 56.7mm, spining at 78 RPM gives me a motor RPM of 321.6. This dosen't seem correct. The motor pulley was a bit hard to measure, but I think I must be accurate within .5mm.

I also own a planer 78.
I asked rega if I could convert to 33/45. They confirmed that you can and sent me the replacement pulley for free - good of Rega. The actual pulley needed will depend upon whether you have a metal or plastic sub chassis.
The arm is the standard rega rb250 and has four wires already although only 3 are used with the 78 cartridge.

250 RPM for 50Htz and 300 RPM for 60Htz mains.
My technician friend with oodles of 80s turntable experience on a lot of Linn and Rega has told me that the Rega's run slightly fast.... (IE not motor RPM but pulley /platter ratio causes greater then 33.333333333 RPM)
This makes em sound pacey but it is also said that the human ear is more sensitive to slow pitch rather then fast so the extra speed leaves a margin for fluctuation without falling below correct speed.
Perhaps contacting Rega is the best thing to do...
