Hi
I recently purchased a used Pioneer PDR-609 recorder, which, although it plays excellently, will not record. Looking at the service manual, I think the problem is with the cdr record power, which can be adjusted through the test mode. However, I dont have a laser power meter to measure the strength of the beam with. Is there a way of adjusting this without one?
thanks, Kit freiesleben

This is the same Sony laser, I believe, as Pioneer has been using since the PDR-555RW, and it is VERY rare for these to fail, and usually the play function is affected. I would advise you not to adjust anything at all, but rather suggest that you unplug/replug the ribbon cable at each end between laser & board to clear any oxidation, then do the same with all the other connectors you can get at. If this does not fix it, it would tell me that the laser is simply bad.

Just a thought... Are you using Audio grade CDr ? I know that the Philips i have, refuse to burn when i try to use data-CD. ( Well, it did, until i found a chip from Italy to fool the recorder 😀)
Best regards
Ebbe
Yes I am using audio grade CD-R - Maxell ones which are supposed to work with the device. It attempts to record, but then says REPAIR followed by Check Disc. On examining the disc, a very faint mark is discernible, which is what led me to think that the record power was at fault.
However I haven't tried disconnecting any cables - thats my job for this evening!
