Pioneer PD-7010

I recently acquired an old Pioneer PD-7010 and I'm running into a bit of trouble...It won't play disks.

Put a disc in the tray and hit the open close button. The tray closed.
The motor kicked on and returned the pick-up to the home location.
The disk set light came on, and the spindle started spinning the disc.

At this point, It's supposed to be reading the TOC...but...

The disk set light goes out and the disc spins down - nothing is shown on the display - still all zeros.

After dong a bit of ehem... RTFM....I found that this unit has a test mode button.

So....power button and test mode pressed simultaneously....and bingo test mode. yay!
and here are the test to perform:
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

All operations here work except TRACK FWD and REPEAT. The focus actuator is moved up and down for both, but I don't see any light coming out of the laser diode. I'm assuming, I should see something right?

Hello. I bought some time ago a Pioneer PD-5010 for to do experiments. It had a former repair, the mechanism has four legs, and below it some kind of cushion. Well, it looks that original cushions was rotten, and were replaced for some plastic cushion. If it don't have these cushion, the mechanism don't have the right height, and it can't read. Maybe it's your problem. Don't manipulate any adjustment by the moment.
Another tip is to see the laser diode current in the test resistance for to see the "health" of the laser diode.

JBWeld(epoxy) for the win!

That piece of plastic that holds the guide rod in position was broken off completely. So, when when the pick-up went to read the disk, it was not in the right position. It doesn't take much!
So, I got a tie-wrap to hold the guide bar in the correct position and then rolled up a small ball of JBWeld and jammed it in the spot where the broken hold down was.

Waited a few minutes, put the unit back together, and viola! Disk set, spinning, TOC, track #1 and off we go! Currently listening to Collage - Moonshine (great Polish Prog band btw..)

I have an inbound PD-5010. When it gets here, I'm going to switch out the whole disk drive
