Basically: the cord went bad near the male jack that connects to things such as an iPod. I would wiggle it and the sound would come back.
Well. I had a spare cable, and cut off the bottom , then soldered the appropriate wires together.
It didn't fix the problem!
If I put the male jack all the way in the female jack of my audio system, then it makes that sound, yet if I only slide it in halfway, then it plays fine, but it's mono and plays on both headphone speakers.
There IS the option to select stereo or mono, but this makes no sense as it is currently selected as stereo.
I don't know what to do! I made sure all the wires were soldered correctly, and I found out the white one can be disconnected and it makes no difference? Is it a bad replacement cable that I'm using?

Hi. I think you've made a wiring mistake. Can you tell us exactly how you wired your stuff together. Also did you use an ohmmeter to determine what wires were on which speaker?
when you said you can disconnect the white wire and you still hear sound, this made me think that you must have wired the speakers in series, which is why you get mono sound.
you need to determine the wiring scheme of the headphones and the cable. Or else it's like guesswork because colors are not always standardized.
