Hi there,

Question : I'm looking for another CD player.
Right now I own a Marantz CD4000 , and ik keeps disappointing me (sounds like ****)

Two friends of mine want to sell their (aged) but still in good condition CD players :

- Marantz CD-84
- Philips CD931

Have listened to both of them, and both sound much better than the CD4000.

Any suggestion which one to buy ? (Spec's , quality , reserve parts , upgradable)

Thnx,

Ernie

You are right

Avoid the 4000. Philips 931 conmtains some design flaws (I only know it from the circuit diagram)

I'd go for the 84, though it is old and if some parts go you'd have to throw it away, probably.....

but while it lasts 🙂

When they're cheap buy them both. I'll buy the 931 from you just for the laser 😉 Had one too but it is hampered by serious flaws as Guido told. Too much work to make it sound very good. It has a CDM9 mechanics that is pretty good.

I'd say the philips.

But since you listened to both, you certainly know better than us which one sounds best. Please tell us 😉

Jean-Paul: do you have an idea of all the work that the 931 needs to sound very good?

Both !

Hi Guido , Jean-Paul and Bricolo,

Thanks for advice.

Like I wrote before : Have listened to the both of them , BUT :
In a different setup.

I now have both players at home and will test them with my (also aged , but who cares : so am I , and quality lasts forever :wchair: ) setup :
- Harman Kardon 3350 Receiver
- JBL LX-1000 LE speakers
- Good Interconnects & cables

The price (asked) for the players :
-Philips : 80 Euro
-Marantz : 100 Euro

ASAP let you know what I (think to) hear !

Q : Fair price asked for the players ???

I'd say if the Marantz plays all discs well, it is a fair price. Most new players in that range are not worth listening at all........

Results !!!

Tired of listening and comparing.......
- Norah Jones
- Jamiroquai
- Rammstein
- and many others....

My findings :

- Philips plays all kinds of disks (Original , CD/R DAO and CD/R TAO)
- Marantz : Original , CD/R TOA , NO !!! CD/R Disk At Once copies.

Setup for testing :

Both players connected to HK receiver.
4 CD's copied (Of course : Backed Up 🙂 for testing.

Both players playing the same CD simultaneously.

While listening switched from Marantz to Philips and vice versa.

Conclusion after hours of listening : No difference (i.e. Not for my ears....)

Also connected the 7 year old Magnavox TK6010/06 player of my 17 year old son and compared it to Philips and Marantz :

Again : No difference (Magnavox = Philips !??? ; Magnavox plays also CR/R DAO disks)

Maybe I should buy a new 30 Euro player at TaiwanElectronicDiscount ???

Any idea's ? ? ?
