Is there any simple way of making it brighter ?

I'm guessing this is a vfd display ? If so I know you'll have checked the usual suspects... caps 🙂
It could just be low emission. Short of trying to mod it to run the VFD harder I'm not sure there's much you can do.

Is that the Philips version of the Marantz 4000 (with a dot matrix display)?
If so I doubt there's anything you can do. I have a 5000 with a working display that can't be read from more than a foot away. I'm not sure if they were all like that when new but seems to be a fairly consistent situation now, I've never seen a picture of one showing a "bright" display.
